Recently all the evidence has been pointing to coffee as bad for my stomach and increasing my cold sore recurrence but I cannot (will not) give it up.

One of my greatest joys in life has been bulletproof coffee for breakfast most days but I wonder at what point I will have to accept that the pain simply isn't worth it and have to start drinking chickory or some other depressing psedo-coffee drink.

What is your no-give up food/drink?

Vodka. Usually plus soda and a lime :)

Wine. About a glass or two a week. It's not great for my IBS and disrupts my sleep, but finding it hard to cut it out completely.

Diet mt dew. I gave up beer, bread, pasta, sweets, Starbucks vanilla lattes, etc. I cannot give up the last thing on Earth that makes me happy!

Not to be rude, but maybe you need to examine your emotional connections with food. – raney May 29 at 14:23

I doubt she was being literal. – January May 29 at 21:04

Neither do I, but nonetheless those are the words that came out. I'm just saying it may warrant examination. There are a lot of us around here that have or had pretty dysfunctional relationships with food. – raney May 29 at 22:15

Crystal lite.

It's 1,000% non-Paleo and going to kill me, but I have a job I hate with a passion, and need to distract myself from my work with some other kind of stimulation - between Crystal Lite and candy, I'll go for the least bad option.

Also artificial sweeteners of all kinds and caffeine pills. You will pry my caffeine pills from my cold, dead hands.

Have you ever tossed some frozen berries in a glass of water? (sparkling water if you want to be extra indulgent!) I recommend sliced strawberries and raspberries especially- that is how I got over my crystal light habit a few years back :) – Jen May 29 at 22:14

Haven't you seen the episode of SBTB where Jesse gets addicted to caffeine pills? Stop that stuff! Ps. La Croix sparkling water is pretty delicious. No sweeteners or sugars. That might be a good substitute for Crystal light. – twochickadeez May 31 at 0:24

Just coffee. The intestinal duress for me is just a more "urgent" onset of my morning latrine-break anyway... Step 1 - Drink Coffee, Step 2 - Go Poo. Occasionally I'll also drink Yerba Mate or green tea, and sometimes I drink Yogi Bedtime tea if I'm particularly troubled or anticipate a sleepness night.

Coffee hasn't affected me in a way I would describe as negative.

And for what it's worth - I don't drink Bulletproof coffee, the brand or the style. I drink black coffee, and I pick the best beans that are on sale (anything between Starbucks, Peets, or 8-o-clock columbian). I make all my coffee in a French Press and I drink about 20oz a day or so (two large cups).

I wish coffee made me go poo! If only it were that easy... – Amy B. May 29 at 17:07

I used to drink 2-6 cans of Diet Dr Pepper everyday. I HAD to have one when I woke up in the morning. Felt wrong and would go to great lengths to not run out-late night grocery store runs for the next AM, family & friends would have it for me in their fridge's, etc. I had been doing this for over 20years. I would bring stash cans with me everywhere I went. I NEEDED my DDP to function, despite my boyfriend's 6year nagging to quit.

Then during a lowcarb stint a couple of months ago, I read that fake sweeteners can stall ketosis for some people. I was quite miserable doing VLC and decided to ditch the DDP since I was already limiting myself so much in other food choices, plus I knew the DDP was bad.

I cut back a can a day, and then just quit. I did however buy some sparkling mineral water in cans to help replace that carbonated-cold-can-feeling. I haven't even missed it. I can't believe how easy it was. I also started drinking tea for the caffeine boost that I thought I would miss but now only do that randomly. I think most people wouldn't miss caffeine at all if they are doing paleo and sleeping well. It is more like a mental habit/addiction. I would know because everyone I know is DUMBFOUNDED that I quit my DDP addiction.

Just offering this up for encouragement for everyone that quitting the caffeine probably won't be so hard like you think it will be. BTW, I feel much better not drinking diet soda.

My biggest "vice" is sugarless, chemical-laden chewing gum. One look at the ingredient list makes me want to hurl, but then I pop a piece in my mouth anyway. I've tried to ween myself by chewing on mint leaves, but I'm not there yet.

There are a lot of gum brands on the market that aren't filled with aspartame, BHT, waxes, and other cr@p. If you're near a Whole Foods or mom & pop health food store, they usually carry them. (Then again, this might depend on your definition of "crap." Some have stevia, xylitol, etc. But definitely no aspartame or sucralose.) Not as many interesting flavors as the fake stuff, though. ;-) – Amy B. May 29 at 17:09

Alcohol, along with whatever artificially sweetened chaser goes with it (unless I'm drinking wine, of course, but I usually prefer vodka).

Coffee. I've finally gotten used to drinking it black, though.

Sugarless gum.

Dark chocolate and nuts. I only include these because I don't know how well they work for my body - not saying they're harmful for everyone. I also have portion control problems, so that probably has something to do with it.

Peanut butter. Almond/sunflower/macadamia nut butter just isn't the same.

Screw natural peanut butter. Skippy in all of it's sugar-ladened goodness filled my cupboard. – MathGirl72 May 29 at 22:56

I'm having a hard time with coffee also- I read a couple months ago that gluten-intolerant folks should give up coffee as well, and since I'm still having some lingering intestinal distress, it should be a no-brainer! I avoided it pretty well for a couple weeks, but am back on it. I don't feel like it helps me function better and I only have a cup a day; I just love the taste.

damn. It's so hard. I wake up with my husband making coffee most mornings! It's tasty. – MrsD May 29 at 12:42

Screw that! I have given up a lot and coffee is where I draw the line. – Erik May 29 at 18:04

Yea, I'm the same with my coffee (I drink one of those international blends with lots flavoring powders that is very very non paleo). I have refused to give it up over the years.

BUT, when I'm not feeling well, I will cut it back. Some days I will skip it, just because I know thats what I need to do.

In general I allow myself the pleasure of my coffee, it makes me happy, so if I'm sick, I'll just take a few sips and thats it, still happy.

Decided what you want to do and how you can adjust to make yourself feel better, if this is your one guilty pleasure, I say be reasonable but don't deny yourself it you don't want to.

The amazing tacos from my local taco truck. It's a twice monthly treat, maybe, and I actually enjoy every bite. Vegetable oil and tortillas and all. Those things are magic and the dudes that cook them are a joy to buy from.

Dairy. Oh I do love it so, but I think it's giving me issues :( Really struggling with giving it up.

My journey giving up gluten was long and arduous--I imagine this will be, too!

I find that dairy talks to me. If it's in the fridge, it calls my name til I eat it. Sometimes it sings. ;) – January May 29 at 21:26

The only way I'll ever give up coffee is after climate change destroys every coffee-growing region on earth. It's just not happening. Ditto, dark chocolate.

I'm not giving up cheese, either. It doesn't give me any trouble, so I see no reason to. I do eat a lot less of it than I used to, and I now eat much better cheeses, so I don't see cheese as something I need to give up entirely.

I did finally toss out the peanut butter, however, which I didn't think I could do. But any time I ate it in any satisfying quantity, I'd get painful, ulcer-like sores on my nose. After several trials, I confirmed that PB was doing it. So yeah, I can ditch stuff I love if it's doing me real harm

Peanut butter and I were best friends. It calls my name every time I go grocery shopping. – MathGirl72 May 29 at 22:56

Oh how I miss peanut butter. As a kid, folks would ask me how I got so tall, and I'd always say, "peanut butter!" I even ate the really crap stuff with sugar in it. California switched me to the just peanuts and salt stuff. But it no longer loves me (but only a little, so I occasionally indulge). – November May 30 at 4:15

Coffee and tea. I keep thinking I'll give them up, but every day I wake up and it's all I want. I know that I'm consuming too much heavy cream with them, too. I really wish I was a half measures kind of person.

I wonder if you cold brewed the coffee, if it would be better on your stomach? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold-brew_coffee

There is a farm right up the street from me that makes their own wacky flavors of ice cream with the milk right from their own cows. Their purple cow ice cream (black raspberry with dark chocolate chips) gives me food-gasms.

CHEESE! I absolutely cannot bring myself to skip the cheese on my morning egg omelets. I have a friend who is from Scotland and he says it's just me being a typical American (which I disagree with on certain levels) shrugs

Anywho.. about the whole coffee thing. I think I just drank (drink) it more for the placebo effect, then again, I usually drink it after I've been up for about 20 hours, with about 5 more to go in a 12 hour work shift. Not so much for pleasure. again shrugs

Hey hackers. I noticed a lot of comments/answers mentioning alternative refreshing drinks. As synchronicity would have it, one of my friends linked this today, and I thought of this thread and wanted to share: http://www.theyummylife.com/Flavored_Water Recipes and tips on fruit and herb infused waters :9

Tacos and taquitos. I know the shells aren't good for me, and I always feel crappy the next day after eating them, but every so often I -still- break down and eat them. Most of the time, I'm all good with my homemade spiced meat on greens (which, BTW, even though they're paleo, I still can't eat much of without totally messing up my intestines), but every once in a while, I simply have to have a full-on taco with the crunchy shell.

SOOooo agree. Nothing quite like an excellent, crunchy, juicy, spicy taco. – JeJ May 29 at 22:19

About a packet of Splenda once a day (on Greek yogurt, or over berries and cream). Diet soda once or twice a week.

Tortilla chips in Mexican restaurants -- but I don't feel great afterwards so last night, in fact, I told the server not to put them down.

I don't consider coffee or dairy harmful for me and have no intention of giving either up.

Cream Earl Grey tea. It's so delicious that it must have some form of sugar/flavouring/crack in it but will never, ever give it up, CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED!

I did a wine/spirits/beer/cider tour of my province back when I was 5 for almost 2 months. My family is big into high quality artisan booze. Our gin collection alone could bring tears to the eyes of many a booze fan. I can't live at home and not be sampling all this awesome alcohol. Getting drunk with my parents/cousins/aunts/uncles/grandparents and rating bottles in the big book of reviews (yup, we bring a binder to parties to keep track) pretty much describes my family reunions. Such a good time though...

Also, even the best, highest quality dairy- just can't do it. Some old funky cheeses are totally fine, but even yogurt brings out the bloat in me. No matter how awesome, no matter how delicious...I need to cut it out. But I am so reluctant!

"lo carb" Monster. I used to drink 3 a day. I have cut down but still drink them from time to time. I drink a pre workout drink everyday too, mesomorph. It has really helped improve my CF times etc.
