After successful runs making kale chips, I'm thinking about trying seaweed chips. But I can't find a recipe. Has anybody made these? Being a baking newb, I was wondering if anybody makes veggie chips with coconut oil or butter, or if that's ludicrous for some reason?

if u have a dehydrator machine it should work. From my experience making kale chips, the dehydrator is 10x better than the oven – Payam Oct 15 2010 at 20:31
Oh shoot, I gave away my dehydrator last winter!! Do you know if it's possible to approximate dehydrators in some way? (without sun) – Kamal Oct 15 2010 at 22:13
@Kamal: funny enough, just came across this a couple days ago: lifehacker.com/5660969/… – ben61820 Oct 15 2010 at 23:00
I use Lex Rooker's dehydrator from a cardboard box for $10 plan. Works perfectly, I have one set up for meat and one set up for fruits and herbs. Cheap and easy. – texasleah Oct 16 2010 at 16:51
Alton Brown once made a box fan dehydrator on Good Eats for beef jerky. All it took was 1 box fan, 2 cellulose air filters, and a couple bungee cords. – Happy Now Jul 21 2011 at 5:36

I found this very basic recipe from the New York Times: The Minimalist - Nori Chips

When I made them, I used some terriyaki flavor seaweed that I'd bought at a Korean market and that had fused together in heat of summer. I cut the fused sheet up into strips, and sprayed the pieces with some olive oil, and them popped them in the oven. The result was amazing. Maybe it was the terriyaki flavoring, but they were tastier than any potatoes chip I've ever had.

Thanks Olga...I'm going to go scour the Korean market now. I did see pre-made seaweed chips at the Chinese market, but they were made with sunflower and soybean oil. – Kamal Oct 16 2010 at 2:57
They sell them at Trader Joe's too...delicious! I believe they use sesame oil. – dr.nikki Oct 17 2010 at 3:41

TJ's are flavoured with sesame oil too but canola oil is listed first :( – stephthegeek Jun 27 2011 at 20:30

I never tried making chips because I think chips taste like cardboard. It's only the salt and sugar they put on them that allows them to have any decent taste at all, and even then, it's minimal. They only work for me as a scooper and holder of better tasting stuff, but I find a spoon works better. (the exception would be potato chips which are entirely too addictive to go there with..) You actually like the taste of chips? Then your taste buds are definitely not related to mine.. ;-)

I love chips! The satisfying crispiness and crunchiness that you can only get in the paleo world from cracklins, I try to replicate with veggie chips. A batch of kale chips only has a little bit of salt and olive oil, but I find them addictive. – Kamal Oct 15 2010 at 23:17
Maybe it's the texture. I have certain textures I prefer like crumbly on the outside and soft on the inside. I personally have no prob with a bit of fat and salt either. – Eva Oct 16 2010 at 0:30
