so over the last couple days I have noticed something strange when I eat. I have been IF kinda, but not on purpose I just keep forgetting to eat as I hardly ever feel hungry anymore. Now though almost every time i eat, often before I am even finish I feel really odd. Like light head kind of and tingly. Almost like I am getting an adrenaline rush. Has anyone else experienced this? It is so strange. It goes away after about 10 minutes after finishing.
Sorry for the hugely late answer, but what you experienced was cortisol. If you go without carbs for too long, you run out of glucose. Cortisol is the hormone that regulates blood sugar believe it or not. It signals the liver to make more from protein which it gets by catabolizing muscle.
As cortisol is a stress hormone it can have negative effects if you stay in your fast for too long. Catabolizing muscle is the obvious one, but it also turns off healing, the immune system, etc. So once in a while is fine, but if it's a constant thing, you'll be doing more harm than good. This is why you'll want to limit fasts to 14-16hours, so typical IFs are you eat lunch around 12-1pm, dinner around 8pm, and skip breakfast. You should only do IFs after you are fat adapted, otherwise you won't be able to tap into your own fat stores and will be very hungry.
A bit vague. It's hard to say.... If it feels "good" and strange it could just be your body's reward system saying "Yes, that's right, eat that" and you are hyper-sensitive due to the lack of eating.
If it's bad and tingly I've had similar from eating too much carb after a fast/coming off a low-carb diet. That's adrenaline kicking in trying to help dispose of glucose because my GLUT 4 and 5 were insensitive from low-carb and my blood sugar spiked. Does it feel anything like being kids with too much candy?
I get that sometimes when I eat cheese. Sorry if that sounds strange. It's the only food that gives me that reaction. It's almost a high. I wonder sometimes if I am reacting in some way to the casein protein.
Ive had some weird things happen during fasting. One time i woke up at night starving so i ate some food but could hardly taste it and i felt like i might have a panic atack. It took a good while after eating to feel normal again. I think i waited too long to eat. I didnt get tingly but did have almost a numb type feeling in my mouth. Sounds like we had something pretty similar. Maybe too low of blood sugar?
I stopped fasting and increased my carb intake and the weird stuff went away.
I agree with crightfunnylol. When you eat (especially a large meal after fasting) your body directs blood away from your extremities and towards your digestive system. This can cause you to feel chilly and also lightheaded, dizzy, or tingly/numb.
Occasionally people with food allergies or intolerances get a similar response as a reaction to a problematic food. I don't have any sort of scientific explanation for it, but I have heard people describe their allergic reactions taking the form of a drop in blood pressure, or feeling extremely tired and chilled immediately after eating.
