We are moving to Raleigh NC next month, and looking to find a source for pastured, soy/corn free eggs. So far every farm and CSA I've contacted supplements with both corn and soy feed.
Are there any paleohackers in the Raleigh area who can recommend a good source?
I think you're going to have a tough time fulfilling this request. I checked around my farmer's market (Wake Forest) yesterday and was told that there's one farmer in Louisburg who does feed soy-free during the warmer months on pasture but (and it's a big but) she feeds her chickens cheap commercial feed during the winter which seems to defeat the purpose completely if you're looking for a completely soy-free egg. Most of the farmers I buy from do supplement with feed that contains soy but at least they're using organic feed when they have to supplement.
One thing I don't truly understand is the amount of difference between a chicken who has been fed soy/corn versus one that has not. I understand why I as a human don't consume either item but I'm not really sure I get why the chickens can't have those items unless you're somehow concerned that the soy will somehow reflect on the eggs negatively. Again, I'm not quite clear on the consequences.
Try smaller producers, people with a sign and a table selling eggs by the side of the road. Some may use corn only. Short of driving every rural route, it can be hard to locate egg sellers but try your county cooperative extension and also the farm and garden section of Craigslist. I have found great eggs and meat from farmers through Craigslist.
