This may not necessarily be tied to Paleo, although I suspect it's diet related. I have days where my face feels oily and somewhat cold, almost as if someone put a thin coat of Vaseline on my face and no matter what I do I can't wipe it off. It's distracting and makes me feel like it's visible even though after looking in the mirror I know it's not.

Some days it doesn't happen at all, and my face just feels normal all day, other days I end up with that oily feeling all day. I swear sometimes it happens after eating certain meals, but can't find a pattern to pinpoint it to any specific food.

Anyone experience something similar, or have thoughts on whether it could be food related (maybe fats, maybe something else)?

I had extra oily skin & hair for awhile when starting in January/February. I eat 65% of calories from fat on average. After 2 months, my skin and hair are oilier than they were before, but not nearly as much. My skin feels better. I live in a dry environment so the oil makes me far more comfy.

My extra oiliness was not sporadic that I remember.

Have you had an increase in the amount of calories you get from fat?

I don't think so, but this is also not specific to Paleo, it's always been a random issue even pre-Paleo. – Shawn Jun 3 at 13:50
Well you also mentioned you think certain foods may be the cause. A food diary could help combined with recording when the oiliness strikes. – westroxel Jun 4 at 0:24
This has pretty much gone away since going autoimmune paleo last week. It's too short of a period to tell if it's gone for good, but it's an indication to me that it's probably a certain food or foods doing it. – Shawn Jun 30 at 14:45

Two things: Low carb eating with 2-3 Tbsp of non-emulsified cod liver oil each day or every other day. This has had a very noticeable lessening effect on my skin oil.

Oily skin is good. The opposite of oily skin is dry, damaged skin. In the paleolithic times and every age before that our epidermis (organ) produced a lot of oil because of our diet and because it helped keep it healthy, naturally. Oily skin maintains health while dry skin promotes skin aging.

A deficiency in arachidonic acid or linoleic acid (both o6 fatty acids) may result in dry &/or itchy skin....

So, possibly the opposite (too much AA or LA) may result in excessively oily skin. Maybe you are getting too much of one or both of these? (or too much GLA, a precursor to AA in the o6 metabolic pathway).

....something to think about & investigate further if relevant
