So I've been doing paleo for three weeks and have been doing awesome. Then I caught this horrible virus plaguing my city and now I'm out of commission. I've been coughing, shivering, and going through other nasty business. I am kicking myself for eating gluten-free chicken noodle soup that has rice starches in it and using cough drops filled with sugary crap. I'm trying to avoid the cough syrup at all costs since it is filled with HFCS. How do I be sick while doing paleo? Should I stick with the paleo diet 100% or put diet aside to use the over the counter medicines filled with HFCS and other nasty crap?

I would definitely skip the HFCS crap over the counter. That won't make you feel any better. I agree that bone broth might be a great idea - full of nutrients, and a nice big warm bowl goes down well when you're feeling sick. I would do your best to listen to your body with your health-consciousness in mind. If you haven't been eating sugar/starch/processed food, the stuff definitely wont make you feel any better. But like Miked said, perhaps some juice with electrolytes will help. Your body will tell you what it wants and what it doesn't want. But i'll promise you this - that sugary crap medicine won't help! They simply mask the symptoms. |

My only sickness while being paleo just happened this spring. It was a nasty flu - you know the kind of virus that you pick up when you visit someone in the hospital (damn dirty hospitals). I've been paleo for 4 years now, and don't even think about not ever being paleo. So I didn't do anything non-paleo while being sick. I did have a bunch of grapefruit juice to keep my electrolytes replenished, so I may have been higher on sugar than I would be normally, but it was only a week, and grapefruit juice is the lowest sugar source of electrolytes. If you're not hungry or can't keep anything down, just don't eat. Even the leanest person has enough fat reserves for a week or more. Rest, relax, and give your body time to heal. |

Viruses are viruses. You immune system is stronger on Paleo, but this doesnt make you bullet proof. As far as the actual food when sick..comfort food--yes, eat whatever you'd normally cheat with but stay away from refined sugar, and gluten/gliadin containing grains. Why in the world would you want to add inflamation and/or insulin rolercoasters to what is already anoverall felling of being sick?!?! More fruit jiuce, fruits, etc--sure go ahead for the added vitamin value. Sweet potatoes for energy, starch etc--sure. Stay the hell away from grains, especially gluten containing ones, you will heal quicker, bar none. |

If you have a nasty cough you need to take care of it ASAP so it doesn't turn into something worse. Call your doctor and see if he will prescribe a nebulizar for you. Make sure to take hot steamy showers as well and drink plenty of hot chicken broth. |
