How much coconut oil should one be ingesting a day? I try to get a few teaspoons in, but the more I read I wonder if that is enough.

I love coconut oil, and use it for baking, skincare, but wonder if there is a threshold where too much may in fact be detrimental to ones health?

One article I read suggested 3 tablespoons a day... That sounds excessive to me.

Thoughts?

Somewhere between .001 tsp and 64 ounces. 1T is 120 calories. Three would be 360 calories. It doesn't have any vitamins/minerals. That's a lot of calories with no nutritive value. (Gee, isn't that one of the downsides of refined flour and sugar?) – Dave S. Jun 1 at 19:04

when you get nausea, loose stools, or worse GI symptoms ...LOL! – Lady_Arwen Jun 1 at 19:53

No nutritive value? What are you talking about. Its got the same make-up as breast milk. Its a complete food. Pure energy.Look it up, before you disgrace it by comparing it to refined flour and sugar. I have seen it with my own two eyes cure dementia and help people lose weight. Improve memory and lose their anxiety/depression. – Chelsea Jun 2 at 1:53

Other than energy, it's got zilch. There's wool in your eyes, folks. – Matt Mar 31 at 23:14

The amount that makes you feel "I've eaten enough coconut oil now, I don't feel like eating any more" (which hopefully occurs a couple of spoonfull before "bbllleeuuurgghhh, I've eaten to much coconut oil and I'm going to vom"

Paleo is all about listening to the signals from your body, and eating what your appetite tells you to eat, and eating when it tells you to eat it.

In the absence of sugar rushes, your appetite is finely tuned to tell you how much protein you need, I'm sure the same is true of fat.

I'd just try to estimate my daily calorie intake needs of fat for weight maintainance and just fit the coconut oil in it.

I typically ingest about 3 tablespoons a day just by eating out of the jar. Counting what I cook with, it could be more. I haven't had any issues taking that much except at first while my body was getting used to the extra fat.

I'm not sure what amount would be considered detrimental, but 3 tablespoons seems okay to me if you don't suffer any ill effects.

What did you experience while adjusting to that much fat? – Kimber Jun 1 at 14:48

A bit of an upset stomach...so I think you have to ease into it, which I didn't do! Maybe start off with a spoonful a day? Then you can work up from there. Also, not sure how new you are to paleo, but when I first started adding fat to my diet (any fat, not just coco) I definitely had to use the restroom more. ;) – Brooke Jun 1 at 16:28

definitely recommend going slowly. i just took 3 tb spoonfuls and feel like crap. – hhsuey Jun 18 at 5:08
@ hhsueyI wouldn't recommend taking 3 tb all at one time! Spread it out throughout your day and include other foods with it sometimes. – Jake Apr 12 at 17:22

If you aren't allergic, eat as much as you want. I mean, you need to get enough nutrition from other foods, but I've read of people eating ridiculous amounts of the stuff. Now I tried this, but I am allergic, and two tablespoons was enough to get me sick to my stomach. I could eat less, but it would cause skin flaking between my eyes that I didn't realize was from coconut oil until someone came onto PH asking about it. This n=1 stuff isn't as easy as people think. I don't know why it didn't dawn on me earlier.

Coconut oil is something you have to build up to. I would start with no more than a 1/2 teaspoon for even up to a month-two months and increase as you feel more comfortable. Two tablespoons from the start would have me on the toilet. – Chelsea Jun 2 at 1:55

I consume stakes of the stuff, make sure its raw to get the benifit (low temp production). I mix it with honey and Carab to make a delicious raw treat. My family (3 of us, one 7 year old) gets through about 1 litre a week. If we cook we use coconut oil. Recently I had my blood work down and my LDL etc were all fantastic. I also use it for deoderent (mixed with Arrow), and 'Pull Oil' but putting a teaspoons worth in my mouth and swilling it around for 15 minutes. Recent research shows cocnut oil mixed with digestive enzymes kills bad bacteria. Coconut oil is wonderful, so much so I want to own a coconut farm!

Too much? When you start eating it straight. (Disgusting and disturbing.)

Yes, this. I don't get why people say they "took" a tablespoon. It's a food. Not a medicine. You eat food, not take it. Do they also take an avocado? Do they take a steak? Weird. – Varelse Apr 1 at 0:07
sometimes the word for "eat" in another language translates to the word "take". My Spanish grandmother always says "take" when she is referring to eating - it could be the language barrier (since this is an international forum) and not a brain glitch – ivymcivy Apr 8 at 17:11

Take it in small amounts at first and see if it helps your skin. Gradually increase from 1 to 2,3 tblspoons to see how it affects your results. Keep in mind every tbspoon has about 130 calories. It would be wise not to go much higher than a few tbspoons to not increase significantly your overall caloric intake. How much coconut oil depends on several factors. You could probably take more if you don't have that much fat in your diet. Also, your body might respond better to more fats or less. In order to aid digestion, I would recommend spacing out several spoonfuls throughout the day. So, take these into consideration and the answer to your question is "it depends".

I am new to Coconut Oil. I got the Virgin kind. Well I baked a sweet potato, added a bit of cinnamon, a bit of stevia, and coconut oil and whooopee. It was really delicious.

I replaced the usual butter with coconut oil and the taste was fantastic. It almost taste like good old fashioned sweet potato pie.

I love is, going to try using it as a replacement for butter. Whatever, the benefits are, I am hopeful of receiving all of them. But when compared with butter, it is not that much more expensive and taste a whole lot better. I love it. I am now ordering a gallon of Virgin Coconut Oil. It will alway be in my home. No question asked.

I am going to give it at least 90 days and I shall report back to you and let you know what results I obtain.

Anyone gain weight from eating too much coconut oil or avocados?

Another idea for the use of coconut oil is to use it instead of oil or other fats to pop popcorn. I'm talking about the old fashioned way in a heavy pot on the stove. I realize that some people stay away from any kind of corn products, and I was advised to do the same, but every-once-in-a-while I make a pot of popcorn with coconut oil (moreso in the Winter months), and it tastes amazing.

Enjoy!
