Does it make cramps worse for anyone? I'm a first time user and not having issues with inserting it properly or comfortably, but I've been under a heating pad for two and a half days now. That's not normal for me. General input welcomed.

I have noticed on a few occasions when I have been in a hurry and left it slightly concave and applying what I assume is a slight amount of suction that my cramps are worse. But if I am careful to break the seal once it is where I want it and let a little air in I don't notice any increase in cramping.

me too, but generally no problems :) – HippiPaleo Jun 2 at 13:38

While I don't use a divacup/ladycup etc, I will say that my first two periods since going Paleo have been wayyy heavier and more crampy. Not sure how long you've been Paleo, but figured it was worth mentioning.

My experience was similar. Also, for me the Diva Cup is more comfortable than tampons, but definitely still crampier than just pads (Luna Pads for me). – Rachel Jun 2 at 2:22
I had the same experience last month (my first real paleo month). This month I had a pretty big cheat the day prior and ate more paleo approved carbs (namely dried fruit) the first day. Made such a huge difference. Also, I have a Diva Cup, but have never used it. It doesn't seem like it'd be more comfortable than tampons, but maybe I'll try it. – Jill Jun 2 at 4:41

It was the same for me as well. I've been using a DivaCup for over a year now with no issues, but when I first went paleo a couple months ago I had the heaviest, crampiest period I've had in years. Also, I love my DivaCup, once I got over the learning curve. Would never use a tampon again. – Miriam Jun 2 at 4:56
use vit D3 5000IU for the cramps, i tried a lot, nothing works, now i'm using vitD3 for a mounth and it's gone, no cramps at all! – Yarah Jun 2 at 15:00

I used a Keeper for about ten years, with the occasional break. I didn't notice a difference with cramps, and I've endometriosis issues galore. BUT: I did have to quit using it - couldn't handle the physical pressure anymore (again, the endo). Such a bummer. I wish menstrual cups weren't so stigmatized. They're such an improvement on bleached rayon and plastic...

Are they stigmatized? I just thought they were kind of hard to find if you didn't know where to look. – Happy Now Jun 2 at 8:50

Well, I think they are. To be more accurate, using reusable menstrual gear is still really stigmatized. I can't tell you how many women have given me the squicked-out face when they learned I used a cup (for that matter, reusable pads). Tons of women are still taught that their period is dirty and only suited for disposable everything. And the women who might try something reusable just aren't exposed to the option (so never try it) or can't afford the up front investment. It's sad. – syrahna Jun 2 at 17:03
That is sad. I heard about the Keeper during the experiment in the self-contained atmosphere many years ago that I can't remember the name of now, and was very excited that something like it might be readily available some day, I guess it never seemed any weirder than a diaphragm or cervical cap, a little soap and water, and it is good as new. I haven't talked to too many people about it, but whenever I get someone's ear, the first thing I mention is how much money I save with it. I think I spent $26 on it, which is roughly 5 months worth of tampons, and it should last for decades. – Happy Now Jun 3 at 4:20

Proud Diva Cup owner here!

I've had cramping issues myself, especially when I first went Paleo - and my only solution to this is not the cup itself but your diet. I find I really need to load up on carbs the few days before my period gets going - eat a sweet potato a day, a banana for breakfast..etc. It really seriously works for me. I haven't had a problem ever since.

I haven't noticed any difference, but have read plenty of stories from women who do cramp more.

I use a LadyCup (basically the same thing) and no, it has never made my cramps worse. This site has a huge amount of info on menstrual cups: http://menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/

No, I haven't noticed a difference cramp-wise.

Will NEVER go back to tampons-- from a cost, comfort, and convenience (not to mention chemical!) perspective, the Diva Cup is a far better choice. I have not noticed a difference in cramping-- my first month on Paleo was a bit heavier/crampier, but now that I'm a few months in, that's no longer the case.
