Does this change your view?

Robb Wolf and others have mentioned hormones contribute to "leaky gut."

If this is true even bio-identical natural estrogen hormones could be problematic??!!

Perhaps some new evidence:

I got off the pill about a year ago (was on it 16 years), as part of my plan to heal my leaky gut, regulate hormones and generally get healthier. It did work for it's intended use like a champ!

If you swallow hormone pills then it makes sense to me it could be hard on your gut - not to mention your liver. Not good. Estrogen, testosterone, progesterone and DHEA are all best when administered topically (applied to the skin). Bioidentical (versus synthetic) are far, far superior.
Read Suzanne Somers' books on this topic. Also Johnathon Wright, MD has a great book on hormones.

Are you suggesting the bad side effects of synthetic hormones never occur in bio-identical ones? The last time I checked there are side effects of nutrients like excess iron (both from food - natural) and synthetic sources -especially in iron overload! I think in general the natural, less processed form is better. Bioidentical hormones are not a cure-all though. robdaquila.com/2010/02/03/… – Lady_Arwen Jun 2 at 16:15

"are all best when administered topically"-This hasn't been true in my experience, in fact, I suffered a lot of pretty terrible side effects from bio-identical hormones. Blanket statements are not helpful, especially to women who suffer from hormonal imbalances. – Lily_7 Jun 3 at 16:54

Heck No! Im not suggesting that at all! BioID hormones can also have side effects & need to be prescribed by a doc who knows what s/he is doing. They need to be closely monitored. Im also not suggesting Bio-Id hormones are a "cure all"-Nothing is! What I am saying is that if you need hrt then BioId-Hrt creams are best. When applied to topically you avoid gut side effects as well as upset/alarm and conversion in the liver. I have suffered EXTREME hormone imbalances & finally got relief from well prescribed hrt creams. For me, some initial side effects occurred when doses were too high. – Crowlover Jun 5 at 1:41
This book is very good (dumb title, great information) Stay Young and Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement. The Science Explained, by Johnathan V. Wright, MD. Staying "young and sexy" was never my goal. Not having EXTREME depression very single month (PMDD) was. Bio-hrt creams saved me. – Crowlover Jun 5 at 1:44

There is a male birth control that was in the works. I believe it was from cottonseed oil which isn't paleo at all. But it had far less side effects. It was killed off like most male birth controls tend to be.
