Hi all,

I brewed my first batch of kombucha and it's really good, looks good, tastes good. I have had maybe 1/4 -1/2 cup a day with a lot of water.

I started to develop really bad pain in my mid to lower abdomen, in the lower intestines. I also became depressed. I stopped drinking the tea and it stopped.

I really want to continue as I know the health benefits are amazing, and I was feeling benefits as well, sleeping better, interstitial bladder issues lessened.

Thoughts?

is it possible its just die off?

Even on GAPS they say to start with 1 teaspoon of any fermented product, in broth or other liquid (water, tea) and gradually work up over time to a tablespoon etc.

I don't know much about how to know if its gone bad other than the obvious.

Hi Kelly, That's what I was wondering too. I have IBS, and also came off a round of antibiotics a few weeks ago, so it's not in good shape. I just wish ther ewas some way of knowing if the brew was "clean" and it's just my body detoxing. – Neen Jun 3 at 2:56
yea, I would suspect that first, if it smells ok....try taking a few drops a day then work up....if it still seems bad, start over...shame! But I suspect its die off, you'd be surprised how fast it can hit and with a small amount – Kelly Jun 3 at 13:15
Just wanted to update you that I have been taking a tablespoon a day and have not had the pain I did last week. So, thank you. Proof that this stuff can really detox you hard! – Neen Jun 9 at 16:47
great that you figured it out and doing well!! you can slowly increase now and not worry!! – Kelly Jun 9 at 18:44

I'm thinking bacterial or fungal contamination. Could be a little bit of E.coli, S.aureus, Candida, or something like that got up in your mix and did some growing. Then you drank the pathogen and it caused gut inflammation.

That's my theory. It's easy to make wonky batches of kombucha at home. My first attempt at brewing the 'booch resulted in a moldy jar of tea.

Thanks for the response. I was wondering about that too, although in doing some research, it appears not to have any funky stuff, mold, etc. Looks very healthy and smells good. But then again, e.coli can lurk and not be visually detected. Darn it, that scoby (purchased from a reputable seller) made good stuff. It really tasted so much better than what you buy at the store. – Neen Jun 2 at 17:33
