I am interested in thoughts, philosophy, and experiences regarding nuts and seeds. Are nuts and seeds paleo; i.e., do they potentially fit nicely with my genetic structure? Have you had trouble with them? Have they worked well for you?

Thoughts/philosophy: Basic of the basics - plants do NOT want you to eat their children! Logic says that quite simply, nuts and seeds have no option but to discourage the rupture of their physical barriers (shells/husks etc) by chemical means. Aside from the "obvious" toxins, we have to contend with PUFA (esp n6). Having said that, they ARE hard to resist - well, some nuts, anyway.. macadamia are "ok" but are nevertheless loaded with phytate. Nothing is perfect - and it seems animal sources are the premier source of nutrition. I tried flax seeds for a while, but the extreme fibre content had a laxative effect - big "fluffy" stools. Sorry if this is an information excess! Worth considering for constipation short term. (Method: Soak overnight, and then blend into a purée, Add to a smoothie, whatever) Will not continue due to doubts about ALA conversion etc - and I prefer herring with my boiled egg... |

I eat almonds. I think they are great. Lots of fiber, protein, minerals (such as magnesisum) and vitamins (vitamin E). Just an incredibly nutrient dense snack. I tend to avoid peanuts because so many people are highly allergic to them. That makes me cautious - just because I don't have any obvious allergic reaction doesn't mean it's not affecting me in a negative way. |
