How necessary is exercise in living a paleo lifestyle? Is it sufficient to simply eat paleo foods or are there greater benefits by adding short intense exercise sessions into daily life?

Absolutely NOT necessary. Beneficial? Yes, but not necessary. Diet is 99% of the puzzle. I don't think anyone should be discouraged from improving their diet because they don't have the desire, time, or physical ability to engage in exercise. Getting your diet in order is the most important thing to improving your health, energy levels, appearance, etc.. Calling exercise necessary discounts the importance of diet too much. Calling exercise necessary is like saying someone who can't exercise due to chronic joint or tendon pain should just give up and eat junk food. A Paleo inspired diet will give vast improvements in health and fitness even if you never do anything approaching exercise. That said, exercise does provide incremental benefits and is necessary in terms of getting 100%. From a Paleo context, I look at exercise as a replacement for a key piece that's missing in modern life, much like taking a supplement like vitamin D. Hunter gatherers exert themselves as part of their lifestyle, not for the sake of exercise, but most of us don't really have the ability or desire to duplicate that lifestyle in the modern world. That's where exercise sessions help. Research has shown that brief, intense sessions are good enough for signalling to your body "hey, strong bones and muscles are important to me!" |

Necessary. Diet is absolutely essential but no one ever got healthy by sitting around doing nothing. |

Plenty of resistance stuff you can do without knees that will drastically improve your health It's not just weight loss, it's hormonal balance Insulin sensitivity, sex hormones, cardiovascular health etc etc etc Absolutely Required for anything remotely close to optimal health. Not at all required for weight loss. |

According to Mark Sisson, your overall fitness is 80% diet and 20% exercise. So, you can get the majority of the benefits just by eating right, but occasional intense exercise will get you that extra mile. |

I'm inclined to agree with Alex (though I'm a bit biased!). Sedentary hunter-gatherer is an oxymoron. |

Dan John makes a good distinction between health and fitness. Fitness is your ability to perform a task. Health is the optimal interaction between your organs. |
