I'm still pretty new to paleo, but I think I've figured out where my stomach pains come from. I have a long history of GERD, with enough heartburn to knock out an elephant. I've taken PPI's for the last few years, though I've attempted to wean off because I know that they can be part of the problem.

Anyway, here's my question. I'm pretty sure my stomach pains are from an acid/base imbalance. Does that sound reasonable? I eat a lot of meat, don't balance it with enough veggies or fruit, and BAM... instant ouch. I eat three eggs for breakfast, but not much else. Should I add some veggies to my eggs? More fruit? Today, I added some rice gasp and I had much less pain. Obviously, the acid load from the protein just kills me. Is there any hope that this will get better with time? Do I have to just cram in as much veggies as I can?

Also, what about digestive enzymes? I have them, but I'm scared to add MORE acid to my system. I just want to keep this going, but it's discouraging being in so much pain. Any other tips?

Its just a likely you have low stomach acid as too much stomach acid.
I hope you can get off the PPIs as soon as possible as they can cause very bad problems long term.
Is your esophagus healthy? I hope you can consult with an ND and do a trial of HCL/Betaine and see if that helps. Its necessary to have a good amount of stomach acid to digest protein. You may not. Designs for Health makes a really good digestive enzymes supplement called Digestzymes.
Good luck.

How are you feeling now? I seem to be going through the same thing and I don't know what to do. I've been told by the doctors (from my colonoscopy) that I have inflammation and the start of an ulcer. I think a paleo diet makes a lot of sense and want to continue, but this pain is worrying me! Maybe you can let me know what you did or are doing to feel better?

Thanks, Bonnie
