Is it just me or are there now ads in the middle of the page? The ads at the top and sides of the page, I can handle; but now it's just obnoxious having it smack dab in the middle of the thread.

Edited it to turn it into a question. Not that the question I turned it into is valid... – No more. Jun 7 at 4:02

Perhaps a better question is: Isn't there more focused, targeted ways to make money from a paleo oriented website? It's hard for me to believe people are clicking on lawyers.com ads. – No more. Jun 7 at 4:06

Running a page costs money, and you only get paid when people click an ad. You have no real control over what is displayed (the ad service pulls keywords from the page and tries to guess at what the readers are interested in based on that, and other stuff pulled from cookies). I like to open ads in a background tab, let them hang out for a min or two, then close them unviewed. It's my way of supporting the site operator (cause they get a buck or so per click) and sticking it to the man (the company has to pay the ad service each time they get a hit). – Caveman Kyle Jun 7 at 15:11

If you use Google Chrome as a web browser, you can add on AdBlock. Works wonders!

Now that was easy! Thanks! – Tikivana Jun 7 at 4:30

AdBlock is great but now there's a huge gaping white space in the middle of the thread lol. I guess it's better than seeing Lap-Band ads. – April S. Jun 7 at 4:55

Out of respect for content creators, I don't run adblock. They need to make money, and if I'm accepting their service for free, it seems like it's the least I can do. However, I do find the huge ads mid-thread to be over-kill and I'm seriously considering installing it. – CaveMan_Mike Jun 7 at 14:36

Mike, they only make money off clicks, not views. As someone who doesn't click on ads even if they were present, ads are a waste of bandwidth and eyesore. Therefore I use Adblock Plus. – Wisper Jun 7 at 14:55

And here I thought this was someone's answer!

In my defense, posting a picture of lady abs is a pretty good answer to most questions...

Haha, I should post that pic for all my answers. ;) – Matt Jun 7 at 11:05

Yeah. I'm not sure what's the point in soo many ads.. It's not like it is that costly to host the site and it's basically ran by the community.

Not too hard to create your own since it's basically just at template from stack exchange.

Really? So now we're going to complain because someone is trying to earn a living off something they created? It may/may not cost a lot to host the site, but that doesn't mean the site owner doesn't have a mortgage to pay. – A at Grain Free Diet Jun 7 at 7:42
It sounds like the majority of people have a problem with the content of the ads. – Karen Jun 7 at 11:08

I'm still for Chip Ins and Amazon affiliate links before resorting to random-ass ads.

Some of you people will complain about anything.

Ads suck and I can put up with them. But really not in the middle of the page. Is it enough to make me leave Paleohacks? No. But I don't like it. If it causes me to use adblock, and causes others to use adblock then it is pointless because the ads won't load and there will not be revenue coming in. And then the other ads on the side of the page will be blocked as well. So I guess it depends on whether the owner makes more money with the ads in the middle of the page. I would say that he would, even if 20% of regular visitors install adblock, there is probably enough random traffic that this is making enough money to justify obnoxious advertisements.

Last night I went on Chrome and added adblock and that took care of the ads. Today, I'm back on Safari and the ads in the middle are gone though the other ads at the side and top are still there. What gives?

I noticed this too. Now it feels like asking this question was pointless. – April S. Jun 7 at 19:04
but you got a lot of responses to it! – MiMintzer Jun 7 at 19:24
Maybe it was my complaining that made the ads go away hehe. – April S. Jun 7 at 19:36
there you go! and thank you! – MiMintzer Jun 7 at 20:59
Also consider Do Not Track Plus -- abine.com/dntdetail.php This extension blocks companies from tracking you, and tells you who's trying to track you. On this PH page, there are 10(!) companies trying to track me. This is the best browser extension ever! – smcdow Jun 29 at 21:56
