Who experienced since LC/ZC relief from cravings for alcohol/drugs? I think there is a huge connection which explains why so many people with brain issues find improvements in their symptoms. E.g. epileptics, autism, ms, bipolar, ED if they stay LC/ZC. So it´s the same for alcohol/drugs?
Yes! We weren't exactly heavy drinkers before, but I truly don't want the stuff much anymore - except for the occasional dry red wine with friends. A stronger testimonial: My husband has actually sworn off beer (OMG!) completely, because A. he doesn't really want it anymore, and B. when he does try to drink a little socially, he feels crummy afterwards.
I absolutely believe there is a correlation between sugar addiction and alcoholism.
Yes. 44 days without a drink and counting...
I have been paleo/LC for a few years and had kept drinking -- sometimes quite a lot -- during that time, but I began to notice my tolerance going way way down. I drank so much during the holidays last year that I quit for the New Year because I was feeling so lousy. Alcohol used to be such a huge, seemingly essential part of my life. Now? I don't miss it at ALL!
I haven't noticed that. I did do pizza and beer at a friends and suffered for it the next 2-3 days. Stomach cramps, diarrhea and constipation (figure that one out) headaches, neusea, and this isn't hangover stuff, I only had 3 beers over the night. I won't do that again for a long time! But I still enjoy a scotch at night and my wife and I will crack open a wine bottle every few nights.
It's been almost a month for me. It's funny -- I thought I'd miss it in some capacity (the taste, the buzz) but I don't. The sobriety, as I tell people, is quite refreshing after all these years.
Well, it has been shown that beer can have a stronger insulin response than some sugary drinks. I wonder if some of that craving is a tie between carb cravings and the carbs found in beer. Personally, I have reduced my alcohol intake for the purpose of reigning in low level inflammation. I imagine it's harder to build muscle and train when it's trying to repair damage done with alcohol poison. As well, hops in beer has isoflavones which may or may not have deleterious effects on the hormone levels in men. There are some reports of many young men in Bavaria with man-boobs.
Since going low carb / ketoadapted 1 year ago I no longer enjoy alcohol. on 2 occasions I have tried to drink beer with mates I have felt dreadful within hours. Alcohol wise it seems I am now limited to occasional dry whites, reds, and clear spirits with soda. its the same with occasional chocholate treats similar effect. I agree with you that low carb probably optimises neurological health
Since going LC I have cut way back on alcohol. I didn't expect this and I wasn't on a mission to cut out the suds. I still like the taste of wine and beer and I have no adverse effects when I have a glass or two, I simply have little interest any more. It just happened along the way.
After giving it a good old nudge from about 16 till 50 (about 4 years ago) I decided I just didn't want to drink anymore and haven't touched a drop since. And I don't miss it a bit. I was curious as to how my drinking buddies might treat me but no worries. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be and the money I've saved is an added bonus..
