Since starting paleo I have been dramatically more tolerant of temperature extremes than those around me. We don't have air conditioning. So, since it has gotten hotter this May and June, I have been perfectly fine, and everyone else around me, my family members, who are not trying to do paleo, are bitching and complaining about the heat. I also seem to not be bothered by the cold when I sleep (in my basement, which can get really chilly at night).
I also have had a great deal of trouble sitting without getting a sore rear-end. I know that people in better shape have more trouble sitting down than others because they have less fat in their butts.
I have been doing paleo hardcore now for about 2 months. Have any of you guys had these experiences?
I can tolerate the heat better now than I used to. However, I moved to hot Houston TX a year ago, so I'm not sure if I am just getting used to the warmer weather or if it is because of paleo. Maybe a combo of both? I haven't been bothered by some of the hotter days at work when the native Texans have been complaining. I have always been able to handle, thrive, and enjoy cold weather. I'm a native Minnesotan and don't usually bother with a coat until it's around 20 degrees.
Funny you should ask, I was pondering this only yesterday and thinking about asking the same question. I too feel (purely subjective, have not been logging my temp) more tolerant of temperature extremes since going Paleo about six months ago. It seems that overall a larger proportion of my body is warmer and the extremities less prone to feeling the chill. I had a pint of beer yesterday for the first time in months and did not enjoy it much, afterwards I felt hotter, like a slight fever, so it does seem to be diet related -- perhaps when your body is 'fighting' against what you consume the body's temperature regulation gets knocked out of whack.
I started hot yoga about the same as I started eating paleo. I started paleo in Nov, hot yoga in Dec. In the first month of hot yoga, I thought the 40 degree room was pretty horrible and uncomfortable and almost could not stay in the room for the entire 90 minutes but gradually over the last 3 months I've found the hot yoga quite comfortable. Then in the last 2 weeks, have been cheating and eaten sandwiches or pizza at lunch for convenience, and have felt completely horrible in the hot room in yoga, as if I just started again! Was wondering if it was coincidence or possibly related?
I've noticed similar things. I don't know for certain how it might work but have contemplated it.
My cold tolerance goes to hell when I let myself indulge in bread. I also end up needing more thyroid medication if wheat starts to sneak in, so thyroid health certainly plays into cold tolerance for me.
On the hot weather side, it could also be a thyroid thing, but I also feel like my ability to tolerate annoyances and hardship in general is tied to how well I've been eating, and I wonder if is a cascade effect of better nutrition leading to better brain chemistry, and that then leads to better coping skills all round.
