I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in 1992, and was given RAI in 1996. What is the impact of being "post-graves" and naturally hypothyroid in the Paleo world? I supplement with Cytomel and Synthyroid as I have no functioning thyroid. I'm confused by the iodine issue as well. Any help would be appreciated.
I didn't get RAI, but got propylthiouracil, with the same effect: thyroid damaged beyond usefulness. Good job getting the cytomel--T3 is often low for us. But you might explore something like Armour Thyroid as well, which provides the T3 and T4 you're getting from the synthetics, plus other hormones produced by the thyroid missing from those synthetics.
I too am curious about iodine, however. People talk about avoiding goitrogenic foods because they interfere with iodine absorption, but if one is already taking a full-replacement dose of thyroid hormones, do we still need the iodine in our diets?
