There's a good chance that I'm going to be buying a semi-custom home soon. I already know that the builder has taken some steps to make the home healthy, such as using low-VOC paint. What else should I consider? Should I ask for a whole home water filtration system or is that insane? Radon system even if tests show no problem or also insane? What else might I be missing?

I don't know if you're going to customize your kitchen at all, but in recently re-doing ours, we stayed away from granite countertops because of the threat of radiation.

Ruth is correct. There are imitation granite counters now that look very nice. – January Jun 8 at 23:22
Yes considering it. I think the builder offers Silestone, which they claim is engineered, though it doesn't appear so from the website. As long as it's not natural stone it's ok right? What are some good high end alternatives to ask for? – balor123 Jun 9 at 4:43
WOW this is news to me! We have natural stone all over our house. YIKES. I didn't know about granite/stone and radiation. Do you have any links for this info? Thanks – Crowlover Jun 10 at 20:00

We love our whole house water filtration system! Its by Aquasana, called Rhino. Its great having clean water in every faucet.
We live in the city and near busy, bus traveled streets so we also have a few air filters through the house that we keep on low (and turn them up as needed like after painting we leave it on high whenever we aren't home). They are really good but I wish we had a really good whole house system. You might consider that. We use air filters by Austin Air called the Healthmate Plus and the Bedroom Machine. Good luck with your house!
