So I think I need to give up on the HCL for right now. http://pureformulas.com/betaine-hcl-180-caps-by-pharmax.html Here's the betaine I've been using. I was using this http://www.healthegoods.com/betaine-plus-hp.html

I was up to 2 pills per day for the first formula (3000mg). and Up to about the same (5pills or 3500mg) and noticed little to no effect, and I'm not quite sure it didn't hurt things.

Now, I'm going to try Melissa's advice and give the apple cider vinegar or lemon juice a shot. Anybody have any luck with either of those? Which one did you use? When did you take it?

I used ACV for a while and noticed mild benefits. Lemon juice not so much.

Sauerkraut juice is superior to both of those.

During pregnancy, for digestion (because it gets sluggish!), I was taking/eating:

  • Garden of Life Raw Enzymes for Women
  • sauerkraut
  • ACV

Never tried lemon juice.

I'd been using Now Foods super enzymes and they didn't work for me as well as the decidedly more expensive Garden of Life Enzymes. But the Garden of Life Enzymes were AWESOME! I noticed a difference on the days when I forgot to take them. I noticed a difference if I upped my dose too much.

The ACV helped with reflux.

How/how much did you take of the ACV? – Rigton Jun 8 at 16:53
Ooo! Good question. I took 1 tbsp in 8 oz of water. Tastes like kombucha. – gilliebean Jun 8 at 20:15
I was also taking bone broth. – gilliebean Jun 9 at 15:32

This is so interesting...

I've been starting my mornings with a large glass (about 16 oz) of water with ACV and freshly squeezed lemon juice - about 1/2 a lemon and maybe 2 Tbsp ACV. I've been told it's good for alkalinity, but I assume you're all talking about them in terms of boosting the acidity of your stomachs.

I've read before that ACV & citrus are good for body alkalinity. Is that after it passes through the stomach? (I know the acid/base thing is controversial, but I'd like to know more about this. Some foods we think of as "acidic," like tomatoes and lemon, are actually alkaline upon digestion. Most fruits are, in fact.

Biochemistry blows my mind. (In a good way.) ;)

Someone could perhaps test their urine pH after consuming ACV. In fact, I plan on doing that. – Mambo Jul 10 at 14:32

I use ACV and lemon juice for reflux- I still am not 100% on the "why", but both seem to help. I prefer the taste of the lemon juice, so I don't know if it was the placebo effect or that I would drink more of it, but I found the lemon helped more.
