He went a year on a paleo diet with a history of biochem without knowing what an omega-3 or an omega-6 is?? – JeJ Jun 8 at 18:08

For a year, this person ate nothing but "...meat, whipping cream, and cod liver oil." This is bad. – Kasra Jun 9 at 0:08

Bad, stupid and nowhere close to what he says in the second paragraph. "In short, what this website preached as paleonutrition taught me that the ideal diet is composed of meat, roots, leafy greens and occasionally nuts and seeds." How do you get from that to "...meat, whipping cream, and cod liver oil"? – Karen Jun 9 at 15:44

I find it a little amusing that the writer gets all up in arms about his Omega 6's, then goes on to claim that the only meat he now eats is poultry.

Poultry plus olive oil. – ROB Jun 9 at 1:35

actually; almost everything I have seen emphasizes the use of grass/pastured beef/meat over grain fed/feedlot- not sure where he was getting his original info from... lesson learned; never use single source documentation. always compare and contrast.

He should have called the post "CavemanForum.com can burn in hell." The paleosphere has touted grass-fed meat over grain ever since I've been into paleo (about 2 years).

His current diet is still paleo:

So to solve my problem, I ended up consuming my current diet of almost nothing but poultry, olive oil and strongly antiinflammatory spices and condiments like garlic, turmeric and apple cider vinegar, and taking cod liver oil on the side (itself a potent antiinflammatory & antiatherogenic agent).

That's exactly what I thought when I read it – Julia Jun 8 at 18:17
Horrible diet by the way. So artificial. – Korion Jun 8 at 18:32

And why does he bash feedlot animals and then tells us he downs poultry like crazy? – Korion Jun 8 at 18:32

Agreed. I don't even go near the cavemanforum, because they only care about weight loss, not about health, so their advice is not always solid there. Over here at Paleohacks though, the advice is primarily about health, so it's more accurate. The guy did the diet wrong. – Eugenia Jun 8 at 20:49
wait till he starts to suffer the effects of excess omegas- nothing in excess is ever good long term. – sage_ Jun 8 at 22:09

Sounds like much of what he managed to miss by only reading the forum could have been learned by taking a weekend to read The Paleo Solution instead.

Hahaha, it's so hilarious to read this having struggled in the past few years with very very low blood pressure. Maybe I can get some tips from him on how to raise mine. I guess eating massive amounts of omega-6 from garbage CAFO meat would help? Naw, not worth it, my new doctor says as long as I'm not having issues with fainting, my really low blood pressure is great.

Peatarians don't like it though :) – Korion Jun 8 at 19:44

Some of us are just born with low BP, Melissa. I just am at 107/65. Always have been, always will be, and my resting heart rate is 43. That's just who we are. :) Embrace it. – IfYouSaySo Jun 8 at 22:19

My friend's family calls all the ladies "frozen female footies"- all the females in the family have cold hands/feet and faint easily- a very low blood pressure bunch! – JeJ Jun 9 at 1:31
My blood pressure is in direct relation to reading articles like this... – Rigton Jun 9 at 4:53

He's an idiot on several levels.

First he writes "what this website preached as paleonutrition taught me that the ideal diet is composed of meat, roots, leafy greens and occasionally nuts and seeds. This diet, touted as the most biochemically suitable for human consumption above all others, is what nearly put me in a coffin."

Then, one paragraph later he says "I pretty much lived on nothing but store meat, whipping cream and cod liver oil for most of a year."

I don't think this poor benighted fool can be considered a reliable reporter considering that he doesn't even recognize the difference between these two diets.

It's unfortunate this person had such a bad experience with paleo. I understand his antipathy towards it now, though I will maintain that when you "pretty much live(d) on nothing but store meat, whipping cream and cod liver oil for most of a year" you're not following the paleo diet very well.

Also, after a few months paleo my systolic BP dropped from about 20 points and I'm no longer prehypertensive. Just my experience. – Mscott Jun 8 at 22:01

So, he only went to one site, not any of the others where countless has been written about grassfed meat vs. grainfed?

Perhaps he needs an internet primer course.

I honestly can't imagine how a person who has done any reasonable amount of research on diet, period (paleo or otherwise) could possibly be unaware of the importance of the omega 6/omega 3 ratio and of the benefits of grass-fed meats. Others have said the same, but I just want to make note that one doesn't have to have studied paleo specifically to know this. And, yes: poultry? Seriously? And what kind of poultry? Industrial, or (true) free range? I guarantee the guy is getting more omega 6 from his poultry than he did from feedlot beef.

And what's with the "whipping cream" thing? Is this some paleo magic I wasn't aware of?

The only decent thing he wrote was to reference the Weston A. Price Foundation, who I tend to enjoy reading. I'm not sure that they're "paleo," per se, but then again, I'm not "paleo" per se, either. But the guy was smart, and they do seem to recommend some good things.

Heavy whipping cream is really popular among the non-paleo high-fat/low-carb crowd (and with LCers in general). For the HFLCers, it's an easy, tasty way to get in lots of saturated fat. His horrid "paleo" diet just sounds like a lot of the needlessly restrictive HFLC (or in this case, zero carb) diets I've seen people try. – More Butter Please Jun 8 at 23:08

  1. Their diet was crappy.

  2. Grain-only fed chicken is just as bad for high omega-6s. Free range is balanced, but battery chicken is not.

  3. Too much omega 3 is also bad for you. It can cause serious health problems if you have to much of it. His notion of "omega 3" good, "omega 6" bad, is dangerous. You want a balance ...

  4. Wild meat does not match the profile of fish at all (the proportions of sat/poly/mono are right in fish, but fish are largely protein not fat even the fatty fish arent that fatty)

But - He does raise a good point though, that while nowadays people are very aware of the whole omega issue (grass-fed), they are not aware that wild meat has a more balanced fat distributrion than even grass-fed beef.

Eating lots of sat fats in the form of butter, coconut oil etc does not emulate this fat distrubution of wild animals. The only way to get a balance, is to eat very varied meats, free range chicken or venison, or game meat is balanced and balance your beef with fish intake to up your monos and polys...(I am still working this out myself, its pretty complex, maybe even impossible to entirely emulate eating wild meat)

my 2c....

Oh, and eat some veges ya nutter!

The way I see it for every blog out there praising there's going to be another one out there condemning it. I personally go by how I'M feeling and that is pretty damn good. I've lost 6 kilos in 3 weeks and I have so much more energy

So nobody told him about the O3-O6 ratio and now he blames the diet. Ok.

Whoa dude.

"I nearly killed myself on their advice and then almost completely reversed what is widely construed to be an irreversible condition without a single doctor's visit just by doing my own research and figuring out more than any of them know."

Yeah, meaning he was never actually diagnosed with anything, and therefore we'll never know what was truly behind a non-issue in the first place. He cured himself of nothing. He claims that his problems were the result of too many O6s and then he "cured" it with chicken?!

"After what mass human ignorance and stupidity did to me, I feel pretty well justified in poking some fun at paleotards and pointing out the HUGE GLARING FLAWS in both their knowledge and their application of what little they really know."

Perhaps should read:

After what MY ignorance and stupidity did to me, I feel pretty well justified in poking some fun at MYSELF and pointing out the HUGE GLARING FLAWS in both MY knowledge and MY application of what little I really know.

I understand that the information MAY have been still developing as he reached his peak of participation in the Paleo community, but there's no reason why he can't adjust his diet now learn from the mistakes or lack of information from his community. A few years ago, green beans were still on the list... I don't see anyone going all out on green beans and blaming the community for misinformation?

34 internet years (4 calendar years) ago I decided I'd go paleo. I followed the recommendations of beanpaleo.forum and are 15 lbs of free range green beans every day. It was tough but I stuck it out because hey, grok ate lots of green beans right? WRONG. Next thing I knew I was hospitalized and the doctors told me that I was malnourished. That's impossible, I told them, I eat 15 lbs of green beans a day. What a crock. Paleo is a stupid diet. Now I eat 15lbs of soy a day, it's much healthier, and I feel great. tl;dr: Paleo is stupid. – Caveman Kyle Jun 8 at 18:57

Whats wrong with a few green beans? I thought they were low carb and low anti-nutrient? – Jamie Jun 9 at 2:19
Jamie: green beans hare closely associated with legumes after more observation marksdailyapple.com/… No offense to anyone, but the idea of the paleo lifestyle is not to go all out on one thing. If one depends on green beans to the point of malnourishment, is the community to blame, or the one who didn't find other sources for those particular nutrients? I don't know who told you soy was good for you either, especially in quantities of 15 lbs a day. marksdailyapple.com/soy-scrutiny/#axzz1xbRpI5xq – Sonya Jun 12 at 18:00

This guy really missed the boat with his diet...

I am 54, do crossfit(as best I can and for 2 years now) and recently started eating locally grown pasture raised beef and locally raised pork as part of a paleo diet (both with no GMOs) and more raw veggies in general(organic if I can find it), though I am not totally paleo, maybe 50/60%. With a change in diet I've lost 20 lbs. From 200 to 180 lbs now. No weight lose with just crossfit. My recent blood pressure was 120/60. Doc. say I have the blood pressure of a 20 year old. I will go in soon to have blood work done but last time I had low total cholesterol, maybe 100 or 110. I'm looking for a higher level of good cholesterol with the diet change. I strongly recommend at least some percent of paleo but add to that less chemicals in the foods we eat. For example, Diamond walnuts have preservatives, my local store brand does not. It is important to read labels on everything. It's time to get back to natural foods....

So...is there going to be a Paleo Diet Tour in Norway now?
