In Australia, we pay about $20 per kilo, or ~$10 per pound. If you go for organic nuts at specialty shops, the price is quite a bit higher. And for people living in Queensland, the price can be very low, in pick-your-own situations.

Geez, I need to shop around, I'm paying about $32 per KG at the moment. Where do you get them for $20? – Rhubarb Jul 13 2011 at 0:00

I buy salted Mauna Loa macadamias on Amazon when they're in stock and sold by Amazon (as opposed to 3rd party retailers on the Amazon site):

  • 3 x 12 oz. bags for $26.15, shipped.

Price per pound: $11.62.

I bought on Amazon 5Ib raw macadamias for $29.50 (+$7shipping), which makes them ~$6 per 1Ib. I dry roasted them myself, separated in small bags. Great deal!

Do they taste good raw? How was the quality, I was going to buy that exact one myself. – Mike Shyu Feb 9 2011 at 23:02
Also what's your dry roast recipe/method? – Mike Shyu Feb 9 2011 at 23:03
I think they taste ok raw, but are softer and kind of sweeter when roasted. I simply warm up flat pan, with no oil, and move the nuts on it till they are begging to get golden. I add salt if I feel like. – Yoannah_offca Feb 12 2011 at 21:27
I followed your link, they appear to be $62.65 for a 5 pound bag. – eric Apr 25 2012 at 12:14

one can buy broken nuts - average about 5 pcs from each nut, at $5 to $7 per lb from a few online retailers. If you don't care much about presentation, they are a good option.

$11.50/lb for raw, whole unsalted macs at www.nuttyguys.com

Fortunately, nutty guys seem to have constant Groupon deals, offering $25 worth of nuts for $10.

when I was on the Big Island, I'd roll by Mauna Loa and pick Macs off the ground, got pounds and pounds for free:)

Hawaii is the coolest place. I remember plucking the best guava, passion fruit, and papaya right off the side of the road in Maui. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Jul 12 2011 at 19:00

i get them for free, unless you count time/expended energy as a cost. but the mature tree in my backyard does not charge me anything.

Update: but when the tree is not dropping its nuts, we buy the Muana Loa 24oz container at Costco for $13.99.

2 ingredients: Mac nuts, salt. Dry Roasted. I wish I could find them raw and without salt at that price.

Another update: a great example of a complete consumer rip-off.

I only buy them in small quantities at the supermarket. But I found this spread that looks interesting:

http://www.vitacost.com/MaraNatha-Nut-Butter#IngredientFacts

I have that spread. And...unfortunately I find it to be a little gross. It's thinner than other nut spreads, without any graininess, and the lovely buttery taste of solid macademias seems weird when a spread is that thin. – Kamal Oct 21 2010 at 21:27
I wonder if it would make a good frosting with some honey added?! or like a honey nut spread with this, butter, and honey? I know some paleo don't do honey but I still need some sweet in my life and stevia or agave are not for me. – PrimalStyle Oct 23 2010 at 6:25

$10.93/LB at Miller's Natural Food Store in Bird-in-Hand, PA (near Lancaster/Leola). Weaver's Nut & Candy Outlet in Ephrata, PA is probably cheaper, but way out of the way for me.

I usually buy them at 20 euros a kilo (raw) in Spain... = $9.08 per pound.

Plus shipping. I usually buy lots of other stuff along with the nuts to spread the costs out.
