HI

I'm considering adding a protein powder to my diet. I have trouble eating enough for my activity level because of my IBS so I'm a bit underweight.

I don't have the patience/energy to do bone broth every day and the Great Lakes gelatin I use sometimes doesn't sit well with me. I seem to do ok with oysters and liver, but couldn't eat those for breakfast.

I'd like to find something that I could incorporate into a morning smoothie.

Jini Patel Thompson's Absorb Plus shakes (http://www.absorbplus.com/) would be tempting to try if they weren't insanely expensive.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

My crossfit coach recommended I get Whey Cool. Haven't tried it yet because of the price, but if he's recommending it; it must be quality. – Jill Jun 11 at 3:19

Thanks! Looks like a quality whey protein. It's 30 servings per container which would make it roughly $2.25 per serving so a bit pricey. Here is another one I am considering: swansonvitamins.com/SWU688/ItemDetail – Kyev Jun 11 at 4:14
yes its pricey however if you think of it as a meal (which it pretty much is) then its reasonable, right? – Crowlover Jun 11 at 6:11

I understand your need to want to get more protein, but whey may potentially irritate your gut, you'd be better off eating high quality real proteins.

I had the same thought initially and tried it and my IBS got worse, and I got a clean product of high quality (added 1 shake per day). If you are eating 3 meals a day you should be ok to get your proteins in.

Thanks for your input, yea I would prefer to meet all my needs with unprocessed sources of protein, but I have a hard time eating meat more than once/twice a day. Whey seems to work for some people with IBS, so I may give it a try and discontinue if it causes issues. – Kyev Jun 11 at 20:47
Kyev I might be way off base here in terms or what could upset your GI system however I wonder if you have tried any HCL/Betaine with your protein (meat or eggs or whatever protein it is). Many adults do not have adequate stomach acid to digest the protein... just a thought. – Crowlover Jun 12 at 2:03

@Crowlover, I just purchased some, based on your recommendation before, I'm waiting for someone to bring it to me (from another country), so I should be trying it soon to see if that works....I'm very curious to do the test and see if I have too little or too much acid once and for all (ie: no heartburn, acid reflux ever).. – Kelly Jun 12 at 11:44
Great Kelly! I hope its a good product for you. – Crowlover Jun 12 at 15:01

I recommend powdered egg whites. Rose Acre farms sells them. It's just pure egg white protein, with no other ingredients.

Hmmm will look into it. My family actually has free-range chickens, but I don't eat eggs often b/c unfortunately they give me digestive issues...but maybe eating just egg whites is different. – Kyev Jun 11 at 20:42

Actually, I was under the impression that the egg whites are harder to digest than the yolk. – ROB Jun 11 at 23:19

I use Nutribiotics Vegan Rice protein, vanilla. Good stuff; best tasting of protein powders also.

Yea I was thinking about doing a rice protein, that looks like a good brand! Have you tried Sunwarrior? – Kyev Jun 11 at 20:49
