I asked a few days ago about getting my thyroid test in my upcoming doctors appointment. Since I hadn't been to the doctor in a long time they tested a lot of different things. Everything came back normal except my lipid panel. Both my cholesterol and non HDL cholesterol were high (252 and 183). I don't really know how to interpret that, but of course having irregular test results has made me nervous. Also, on my thyroid they did a "TSH with reflex to T4" test and it came out .83 with the standard range being .32-5.50. When I was reading about hypothyroidism they said that one things it causes is high cholesterol. Could this be related? Or do I need to change my diet? I will talk to my doctor later this week but wanted some better insight to what's going on.

is the only thyroid test you had done, the TSH? You are not hypothyroid by that.... TSH alone is not at all comprehensive for assessing thyroid. Did you go to the website I mentioned before? stopthetyroidmadness? – Crowlover Jun 11 at 5:33
I did but I didn't have time to read over all of it. I believe that's the only test they did to test the thyroid. Since he was doing so many labs I assumed he was testing what he needed to. Like I said, I haven't been to the doctor in a really long time so it was a little overwhelming. – kara t. Jun 11 at 14:00
It is overwhelming at first, for sure. Im curious if you have symptoms of low thyroid? That's most important.Your TSH could be lower for sure but .83 is not an issue unless you have a lot of hypothyroid symptoms in which case you would need more thyroid tests. – Crowlover Jun 11 at 21:27
also, its important to know that the lab reference ranges are not always what is Optimal at all. – Crowlover Jun 11 at 21:29

Kara if I were you I would want to have the following labs for sure if you have not already. Free T3

Free T4

TpoAb

Reverse T3

TSH (you already have)

Ferritin

Vit D

Cortisol

TSH alone is not a comprehensive assessment of Thyroid function. You do have some symptoms of hypothyroid but it could be other things too. Good luck

Kara what are your symptoms or problems? – Crowlover Jun 12 at 5:50
Collect all your lab records first. Then interpret the results. Take action. You need to become a custodian of your blood tests. – Mambo Jun 12 at 16:46
Exhaustion, unexplained weight gain, increased anxiety. I have several other symptoms like irregular periods, and muscle aches and symptoms but those could be related to trying to race train. Also dry skin and hair but I live in Colorado and it's dry here. What lab records do I need to collect? I understand that I need to take charge but don't know enough to know what actions I need to take. – kara t. Jun 13 at 2:36
Do you feel your doctor is good? Have you considered an ND or a functional medicine MD? – Crowlover Jun 13 at 6:44
