I am in full-sun for at least an hour everyday, and use regular sunscreen for my body, but on my face I use mineral make-up powder that contains: titanium dioxide and zinc dioxide. My face never burns, is it the zinc? Who else uses mineral makeup as sunscreen for face? Am I getting any other nasty rays without commercial sunscreen on the face (every kind breaks me out!)? I have freckles, but haven't noticed any darkening, or others cropping up, after three years of mineral make-up use.

I don't usually wear make-up but both titanium dioxide and zinc dioxide are sun blocks. So yes, your make-up is giving you some protection. Because it is a sun "block" it acts as a physical barrier, as opposed to a chemical barrier to the sun. It also depends on what time of the day you are outside since the sun's rays are strongest between 10am and 2pm. Lastly, taking Vitamin D3 can also be protective against burning. Check out this site; it has just about everything you want to know about sun protection: http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2010/07/20/natural-sunscreen-review-do-mineral-based-sunblocks-work-2/ |

I use Marie Veronique Moisturizing Face screen every single day and I love it. It's 20% non-nano zinc oxide. I have used some sort of mineral foundation on my face for at least the past 10 years and I think it's helped me a lot. My skin is in pretty good shape and I rarely get color on it. I've had a lot of failures with different brands trying to match my skin color or making me too greasy or breaking me out or itching but I have found several I love. I like the MV because it's liquid. I love Laura Mercier minerals because the finish is beautiful and I found a great color match which is always a huge challenge for me. |

UVs are high from 9am to 6pm because the curve peaks at 2pm roughly, http://www.nrpbdev.org.uk/uv/australia/uv_index.htm however it depends on your location; typical website to check the max uv index with no clouds is http://www.temis.nl/uvradiation/nrt/uvindex.php |

I do too! It works great.
The Environmental Working Group has a fantastic website to help people choose sunscreens and other bodycare products and rates the toxicity level of various ingredients and products. |

Mineral makeup is an excellent sunscreen, I never tan on my face because of it. The reason why companies don't usually state the SPF is because it's expensive to test. Lily lolo (I use it ever since 2009, an UK based company) just recently finally tested their makeup and it came to a SPF of 14, that's pretty good. One of the best natural sunscreens against burning is L-tyrosine (taken an hour before tanning), it's the precursor of your natural pigment, and it really prevents a sunburn, it's better than krill oil etc. |
