I've been playing with a ketogenic diet for 6 weeks now and have never quite gotten into a deep state (according to the stix, which I know are not always accurate).
I was eating a lot of coconut oil and some coconut butter (not as much as the oil since it has sugar), but then I read in a few places that the medium-chain saturated fats in coconut mimic carbohydrates in the body and therefore end up as preferential fuel rather than one's own body fat. This could possibly prevent ketosis.
Anyone have thoughts or resources?
Even if MCTs are burned preferentially, they certainly do not keep one out of ketosis. On the contrary, MCTs produce ketones even in high carb dietary contexts. The sense in which MCTs "mimic carbohydrates" has to do with the fact that they are used for energy very quickly. LCTs have to go through the lymphatic system before making their way to the blood and the liver, whereas MCTs hit the portal vein and transport to the liver right away -- thus they behave in some ways more like a carb than a fat.
I consume copious amounts of coconut oil/milk/water and am able to remain in ketosis.
I have been experimenting heavily over the last several months with what products "knock" me out of ketosis. Coconut isn't one of them...
But the #1 thing I found that affects the whole process is, water intake. If I want to truly get an accurate representation, I do a 'water' fast for about 18-20hrs before I use those ketostix.
There have been series of days where I ended up VLC <10carbs in a row, and the ketostix were negative for ketones. On those same days though, I had intense work outs, where I remember consuming upwards of a gallon of H20 during the workout, and even more through out the evening post.
So, trust your previous meal decisions vs what the KetoStix read. And if you want the visual confirmation your are in ketosis (and I can understand that for sure), decrease your water/liquid intake for a day or so and re-test.
Here is what I have experienced with water intake and working out. When I work out (1 hour of cardio kickboxing for example) I gulp a lot of water. I think this "appears" to take me out of ketosos for 2 reasons. First the consumption of large quantities of water "dilute" the ketones. This does not mean that there are less ketones. You are simply releasing them through larger portions of urine, therefore less ketones per unit of measurement. (Ever notice that when the ketosis stix resembles a dark or deep level of ketosos it is usually when you do Not urinate very much?) Furthermore, the fat burning process takes place during stages of REM. So, get this, the following morning proceeding an intense workout I notice an even deeper level ok ketosis..... also splenda, any diet soda, and equal totally take me out of ketosis...stevia doesn't.. Hope this helps
I taken spoonfuls of coconut oil to get into and remain in ketosis. Good stuff.
Not sure you need to get into a 'deep' ketogenic state to reap the benefits. Even with trace ketones you will be burning fat.
