I have family members that are allergic to Paleo staples-all nuts, coconuts (even the oil), most seeds (like sunflower), eggs, & avocado. For the most part we just eat meat, fruit, & veggies but sometimes a cake, wrap, or cookies are really wanted by my husband and kids. I have been occasionally using the standard gluten free all purpose mixes because I can't use almond and coconut flours and the like. I can't even do a "flourless" cake because of egg allergies. Should I not worry so much about the occasional gluten free bakery item or the use of standard gluten free flour for birthdays & such? They also use organic sprouted corn tortillas because we can't do the coconut wraps like most Paleo folks. We are are healthy and fit with appropriate body composition (not over or under-weight/fat).

Have you tried eggs other than chicken? I have a friend that goes into anaphylactic shock with chicken eggs, but can eat duck eggs with no problem. – MathGirl72 Jun 18 at 20:22

wow, this is a challenge! I can think of a few, but not sure how 'substituting' them might actually work so I'll just randonly toss them out there for you!!!

Not necessarily 'paleo' but should be fine if tolerated for special things: Oats-you can powder them up and make a 'flour'

rice flour-I don't use it, but I've seen it

tapioca flour-(is from yucca) again, I' don't use it but have seen in receipes (I think most receipes call for a small amount of rice, tapioca flours mixed)

egg replacement, I've seen 'chia seeds' soaked, they get 'gelly' and can be used as egg substitute

there are a ton of great resources on Pin interest (grain free, egg free, dairy free, etc. to search even Paleo or GAPS)....

hope this helps! if I think of anything else, I'll post back!

Thank you! I have tried a lot of egg replacement tricks-just not with a flourless cake yet-typically I've only had luck w/recipes w/no more than 2 eggs but perhaps I should experiment some. Bob's Red Mill has the best replacer but I can't use it because it's made in the same factory with all those nut flours-arg. Unfortunately, Chia seeds are out and so are oats. I have tapioca and rice flour in my pantry but haven't see only those two in a recipe, typically there is a 3rd. YoungPaleoLover mentioned Sweet potato flour-interesting, I've never seen it in a recipe or store. – pdxhollym Jun 18 at 20:10
I just read something that suggests you can substitute yogurt for eggs, so perhaps they can make coconut yogurt/dairy free, that might work! – Kelly Jun 19 at 12:12
oh, just saw no coconut....hmmm, how about GAPS yogurt which has been fermented 24 hrs to eat off the lactose?? – Kelly Jun 19 at 12:12
soy milk yogurt? – Kelly Jun 19 at 12:14
Thanks Kelly, GAPS yogurt perhaps. Mostly I'm looking for the ability to make a cake w/o using grains but I don't think it's possible since I can't use nut/coconut flours. – pdxhollym Jul 3 at 1:04

Thank you, is there a source you recommend? Hmm-I just bought a dehydrator, I wonder if I can make it?! – pdxhollym Jun 18 at 19:51
deandeluca.com/pantry/pantry-new/… Also unlike a nut flour, there is no poor omega-6 ratio and since it's for your kids who prob eat more carbs you can pretty much enjoy this in treats unlimited. MY personal fave is "raw pancake" batter sweet potato flour, cinnamon, apple sauce, melted Ghee, and peanut-butter (peanuts aren't nuts, so no allergy?), banana, and frozen berries, mash together and YUM! It's a great treat. – YoungPaleoLover Jun 19 at 14:06
Thanks! That sounds delicious. I didn't mention peanuts but they are also an allergy. Your recipe might work without them. – pdxhollym Jul 3 at 1:05
Yes it could still work :) – YoungPaleoLover Jul 3 at 3:15
