My heart aches for you. I have no suggestions that others have not already addressed, but I hope you find peace in your quest for answers! – MathGirl72 Jun 19 at 15:46

Thanks Dragonfly. I was hoping you'd chime in and I'll look at her stuff. – foreveryoung Jun 19 at 15:47
that's kind of you to say, MathGirl. I'm really okay though- exponentially better than when I was a young boy. – foreveryoung Jun 19 at 15:50
please see a medical professional and report back. Closed until then. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Jun 19 at 15:55

second opinions never hurt, but will you be satisfied if the 2nd opinion is the same as the first?

Well, by nature I'm not easily satisfied, so probably not. But it would be comforting to have another doctor tell me I'm not going to end up like my mother. – foreveryoung Jun 19 at 15:33

"Could my orthorexia be a manifestation of schizophrenia?" "I am wondering if I should get a second opinion"

There's nothing wrong with getting second opinions, but an internet forum isn't the place to get them about serious medical matters.

I'm a horticulturist, not a doctor. What validity could my opinion possibly have? And any real doctors who post here couldn't ethically give you an answer because they haven't seen you, done an exam etc.

Go see a real doctor in person for a second opinion on this. Come here for help on fine tuning what you eat.

So why do you come if it's not for other people's opinions? Is it just to voice your own? – foreveryoung Jun 19 at 15:45

Invalid? I don't think so. He's asking for support and opinions, which all of us are capable of providing. – MathGirl72 Jun 19 at 15:47

This is a great place to get opinions on things like where to find a certain product, whether yyy food is better than xxxx, how to get used to eating less carb, how to improve sleep, all kinds of things that aren't serious medical issues. You could ask something like "do you think orthorexia is an over diagnosed condition?" or "where could I find a paleo friendly doctor who knows about schizophrenia?". Those are questions that acknowledge that we aren't medical experts. – Karen Jun 19 at 15:52

I personally come here because a. visiting regularly keeps me on track in my own paleo goals b. there often is great info in the answers (there's often terrible also, which is why it isn't a good place for medical) c. I have a question (I find many answer in the archives so don't ask all that many myself.) d. sometimes I feel like I have an answer. There not always answers that people want. Take what you can use and leave the rest. – Karen Jun 19 at 15:57

Thanks for the clarification, Karen. I use the site for the same reasons as you. I was not looking for a diagnosis and if given one I wouldn't have accepted it unequivocally, i would have used it as a talking point with a doctor. That is why I was wondering what people's thoughts were on a possible orthorexia-schizophrenia linkage. I really am not foolish enough to accept a diagnosis from a stranger on the internet. – foreveryoung Jun 19 at 16:05

I suspect schizophrenia and anorexia nervosa have some kind of link. Years ago I worked with a man who had schizophrenia. His sister had anorexia nervosa and was probably going to die. It was strange how similar their symptoms actually were.

OMG I know! I've told my doctors this a million times. If you had covered me with a veil so you could not see how obviously underweight I was, you would say that I was a paranoid schizophrenic without hesitation. No one really seemed to get the implication of that statement. Thank you so much for writing this. – foreveryoung Jun 19 at 15:53
