A lot of comments seem to be perfectly good answers, so why not create an answer? Is it to be the first read response? Is it that you don't think your opinion is good enough to be judged as an answer? Do you not seek the sweet sweet thrill of watching your reputation points go up in 10 point increments?

And yes before you ask, these things do keep me up at night, disturbing my circadian rhythms.

For me, commenting is just chiming in - quick little bloops and bleeps. When I answer it's typically pretty full blown and thoughtful, I want to take more time with my reply. :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jun 20 at 21:34

When I'm in a hurry or in the mood to write a response worthy of a twitter tweet then I leave a comment. When I want to be praised for my tremendous insight and show off my reputation score I write an answer.

most of my rep points basically come from 1 answer I wrote calling two paleo(ish) gurus ass*****. Unfortunate newcomers who think rep points are correlated with paleo wisdom might get the mistaken impression that I know what I'm talking about. Scary stuff. – foreveryoung Jun 20 at 21:53

Because often you don't get any votes for your answers and I used to be a reputation-whore. I didn't want my account to have 3000 answers and a reputation way too small :D.

Also because comments can't be down-voted.

And finally because I often find my own thoughts not worthy of an answer.

Answering with a comment to the main question can help ensure your amazing and cunningly articulated opinion doesn't disappear too fast. Comments to the question are probably read first too. I know that I often won't bother scrolling all the way down to see all the late answers--especially if some of the early answers received lots of upvotes.

Meantime, you can't get downvoted for comments. Since we've seen plenty of downvoting for offenses no greater than having an opinion that differs--no matter how respectfully it was offered--I can see why some might want to comment.

Now, kindly upvote my answer, since it is clearly the most definitive, comprehensive one, and I'd really like to hit 3,800 points by the end of the day. [Edit: I upvoted this question. I'm just sayin'....]

When I think my answer is so short and simple that it feels silly to take up the room an answer takes on the screen and bump a potentially better answer off the screen.

Beause I'm typing from my phone and it's awkward to deal with the "Are you a human" page when you don't have a mouse or full-keyboard to copy-paste. You don't get that verification page with comments.

Because I'm typing from my phone and it's difficult to edit an answer there, so if I have something more to say I put it in a comment.

And some times because I don't know if my comment will answer the question but I still want to help. I don't wan't to take up an answer when I don't think my answer will actuallly help.

And yes, I was tempted to make this answer a comment.

I guess I try to write as an answer when what I have to say actually pertains directly to the question asked. I tend to write a comment if my respose is less directly related.

Shrug.

Answers are like, uh, harmonization. Comments are like riffs. In terms of having an interesting jam session riffs count.
