I was wondering what to have pre workout? I know lots of people do fasted but that doesn't work for me. I lift heavy and want something that will help me progress with my lifting and gaining muscle. I used to have oat bran with banana and some turkey. What sort of thing would sustain me? I work out about 45mins after this

What I used to do aren't too far off from what you're already utilizing, and all are a nice mix of protein and carbs. I eat some dairy, so just omit what you're not into and they should fix you up nicely :)

Chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, cottage cheese, eggs, milk, whey powder, starchy veg - these offer a low GI so they're digested slowly which means steady energy. If you're doing oat bran.. then oatmeal, too.

Note: I now train in a fasted state, I start my lifting sessions between 6-7am, but eat immediately after and have successfully gained some glorious muscles and gotten nicely strong. Yogurt or a Whey shake. Eggs. Banana. Berries. Starchy veg - usually a Japanese sweet potato. Sometimes meat - depends on how I'm feeling. Good luck and get strong!

Thanks so much!Thing is my body is having issue with grains currently and maybe dairy? so i'm trying to eliminate grains first and see how i do with dairy. So no oats for me! So chicken & a banana or sweet potato should do the trick? – tahinilove Jun 21 at 14:09
Definitely play with the dairy - goats or sheeps milk/products are awesome and worth trying if you want to have dairy but troubles are had with the moo. Any of the combos above for sure will work, just take away the things that are bothering you. Good luck and maybe do an update sometime so we know how yer doing! – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jun 22 at 14:40
Thanks! tried some turkey banana and nuts, didn't feel I had as much energy as I'd like so I think I'm going to go sweet potato next time! will let you know on how that goes! I love goat dairy-just wish i could get goats milk cottage cheese. Such a love hate with dairy, love the taste but it hates my body! – tahinilove Jun 23 at 11:23
Sweet potatoes are great, my fave actually. 90% of the time I go with the Japanese variety, purple skin/white flesh, on occasion regular and then Okinawan - this one is purple flesh/white skin. I've actually been using goats yogurt lately as a binder with chopped chicken and such. A nice 1-2 punch. Good luck! I love experimenting. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jun 23 at 11:39
Never tried the japanese ones! Will have to give them a go. Goats yogurt with chicken sounds delicious. I love how its like a super smooth and creamy goats cheese but better! How do you deal with your carbs for the rest of the day ? – tahinilove Jun 23 at 14:02

I've found quite a bit of success with a couple of eggs, spinach, coffee, some sort of meat (usually bacon) and half an avocado.

so you don't require any carb at all? – tahinilove Jun 21 at 14:06

A couple of soft scrambled eggs, a banana, perhaps a little meat - basically think of items that are easy to digest while still being quite dense calorically. Also items that are relatively "bland" in flavor, I've actually had issues where a bacon-flavored burp in the middle of a hard set has sent me to the bucket more than once - which is why I avoid salty, smoked, or spicy foods before a workout.

completely get that-hence why i used to go oats and banana pre-paleo. Worst thing could be getting iffy at the gym! – tahinilove Jun 21 at 14:07
