What sort of self-care do you employ, both paleo and non-paleo?

Non-paleo - Two words: Angry Birds. Sends you into this zen-like trance of low-level concentration and relative tranquility (except when those smug piggies grin at your failed attempts...). Caveat: Angry Birds is not great for reducing blue light and getting more sleep. Also avoid making stupid mistakes: don't play Angry Birds while walking or driving. :-D Also, for a paleo approach, as others mentioned: long hot baths and a good night's sleep can fix just about anything. Except, you know, when you're the parent of young children, and such luxuries seem light years away. :-p |

Sleep is the cure-all for everything imho :-). Also some meditation, reading, CANDLES! Something about candles and a warm fire in the fireplace. Occasional glass of wine...a massage. Oh foot massages are the best. |

warm bath is rare but makes all things OK. Laying low and watching a few good dvds is sometimes nice when the energy levels are low. |

I stop training/lifting for a week and just go on walks instead. Go to bed early and get alot of sleep. Natural Calm and chamomile tea to relax. Spend time with good friends in light hearted situations. Meditation. |

Rest, basically. Flop down with a book or laptop, and/or nap/get to be early that night. |

I have a big book of quotations, which can be a fun, thought-provoking read, especially when I'm under stress. |

Lessee.. Lately, not sitting - I'm trying to get away from too much sitting/slouching in my life. Or at least using a stability ball for better sitting posture and freedom of movement. Simple joint mobility routines. Relaxation breathing is good (filling the abdomen, 4 seconds breathing in, hold 3 seconds, 8 seconds breathing out, just focus on the breathing). Reading. Not really reading junk, stuff that's informative or helpful but also interesting and/or entertaining, like a good history book on a place or time you know very little about. A spoon scoop of almond butter to keep me level between meals. Magnesium supplement at night (better sleep for me). A couple of shots of good quality espresso. A glass of single malt scotch, yum. Calling up someone I haven't talked to in a while to check in and catch up. |

A lot of social animals use grooming as a way to soothe others. You could have a loved-one give you a massage or brush your hair. Or you could self-groom by taking a bath, doing your hair, painting your nails, etc. I notice that when I take some time for myself to primp/preen, I have a general increase in feeling important/valued. I've also seen horses and dogs act in a similar way when groomed and "dolled up". I also find hiking and camping to be rejuvenating. |

"I feel burned out due to...." Take a rest (break) from whatever follows "due to." Sometimes, as easy as resting, sleeping, taking a bath or a walk. Sometimes harder, like when what follows "due to" is "my whole freaking life." It sometimes feels that way. |

Going to the hot tubs! Hmm what else... massage, bellydance, watching a really good movie, doing a fun (usually tech-related) personal project. |

Burnt out in general or while starting the paleo diet? If the latter, I started taking zinc and magnesium supplements and I rarely feel lethargic anymore. |

Contrast showers. I don't know how I made it so long without these. Go as hot as you can stand and count to a hundred then as cold as you can stand and count to a hundred. Repeat several times. If you have access an ice bath and hot bath this is even better. Throw in lots of sleep, some extra fat, and some natural calm and you are good to go. |
