Just curious if there are any super healthy foods you hate and if you try to eat them anyway, or overcome your dislike?

I personally can't stand avocados. I don't know why, and I wish I didn't. I have been forcing myself to eat guacamole and that isn't solo bad, but the idea of eating an avocado raw is unappealing.

True dat on the avocados...I will eat guacamole on everything, but the texture of raw avocado & flavor freaks me right out. – Divrgurl13 Jun 22 2012 at 23:32
Is it the flavor of the avo or the texture? I'll throw avo in the blender with coconut milk and frozen berries, stone fruit, or half a banana to make a smoothie for the family for breakfast. Most of the time I have to thin it out with water. – MathGirl72 Jun 22 2012 at 23:33

Ripe avocado with lime, salt, and steak is awesome. Unripe avocado tastes like butt. – scottts Jun 22 2012 at 23:37
@scottts: and rubbery! – MathGirl72 Jun 22 2012 at 23:38

AAAAH! A kindred spirit! I thought I was the only person in the world who doesn't like avocados! I don't know why...they have almost no flavor, so it isn't that. And it's not the slimy texture b/c I love okra. (I'm the only person I know who can't stand guacamole.) – Amy B. Jun 23 2012 at 4:01

KALE!!! I just can't get over it. No matter how many times I try to eat it - cooked many different ways - I just can't gag it down.

word . – foreveryoung Jun 22 2012 at 23:40
Try this: - 1 pound of (preferably lamb, but beef is also fine) mince - 1 can of coconut milk - 1 pound of (chopped, I use frozen) kale - salt - a bunch of cilantro - enough sambal or some other spicy paste to make it spicy - optionally: one or two eggs Fry the minced meat a bit, then add the rest and cook until texture is ok (no longer liquid). Add raw eggs around the end, mix through and cook. I make this a few times every week, and never get tired of it. You barely taste the kale, it's there mostly for its texture. – TimB Jun 22 2012 at 23:44

When I read the question, kale was the first thing to pop into my head. I've given it a fair shake, I'd say, from sauteed with spices, to putting some in an alfredo sauce to kale chips with every possible topping. I can't do it. Did you read this? (Satire) slate.com/articles/life/low_concept/2012/05/… – Ultrajen Jun 23 2012 at 0:31
I don't much care for kale, but I do like other greens, like mustard and collard. – Dave S. Jul 16 at 14:23
Fry some bacon, then cook the kale in the bacon fat, seasoning it with smoked paprika, red and black pepper, salt, and a touch of lime juice. Then crumble the bacon and put it back in when the kale is about done. – RaiseFitness Jul 16 at 15:08

LIVER. Like, OMFG NO. I've tried to develop a taste for it, and I'm not a fussy eater. I don't have any particular objection to offal, either; I've eaten heart, brain, and tripe plenty of times before. But there are only two ways I can stand liver: rumaki (chicken livers and water chestnuts wrapped in bacon) and pate (made with lots of butter). I do love foie gras, but that's not really like liver at all. Beef liver? Forget it. NO. CAPSLOCK.

And much as I love fish and just about all seafood (including fish roe and sea urchins), certain species of fish are not fit for eating. Tilapia? I'm looking at you. The texture is just wrong, and it doesn't taste very good at all. Catfish? You too. And while cod's not as bad, it's so bland--the only way I've ever liked it was beer-battered and deep-fried, and that's just not happening anymore.

I also cannot stand bananas. The smell, the texture, the taste--LOL, I would so totally fail over at 30BAD.

+1 for hatin' on beef liver but liking pate. I'm the same way! (See comment above) As for failing at 30BAD, don't worry. We'll keep you here instead. :) – Amy B. Jun 23 2012 at 4:08
Word! It is beyond disgusting. – Cheryl Jun 23 at 14:23
I have some grass-fed beef liver thawing for lunch. Yum! – MathGirl72 Jun 23 at 14:32
Whoa, I'm in 100% agreement with this entire comment. I'm convinced that tilapia is a conspiracy by the food service industry to force cheap, low quality fish on us for the same price that you used to get the good stuff. – trjones Jul 16 at 15:02

Sauerkraut. I bought a jar of natural, uncooked, unpasteurized sauerkraut and it's still sitting in the fridge. I really want to try it, but I'm afraid it's going to be like the soggy, nasty stuff I tried years ago. I even want to make my own, but I'm afraid to!

Bubbie's cured me of that fear. (It's nice and crunchy. Also, their kosher dills are amazing.) I used to be afraid of it, too, after a bad experience when I was younger. – blueballoon Jun 23 2012 at 0:09
That's the brand I have. I am in love with their dill pickles. I may just have to conquer my fear and open the jar tonight. =) – MathGirl72 Jun 23 2012 at 0:22

If you had my home-made sauerkraut you would change your mind and asked me for more. True. – VB Jun 23 at 14:15

Saurkraut is delicious. Kimchi is the stuff you really have to hold your nose and just eat. Smells like a garbage dump, but tastes great. – trjones Jul 16 at 15:03

Ha, glad to see other Bubbies fans here. At over $6 a jar the stuff better be both good and good for me is all I can say. – PrairieProf Jul 16 at 15:45

Tallow. Makes damn good fried potatoes, and I know the grass-fed stuff is healthful, but holy hell it smells like butt. I'll stick with lard/duck fat/coconut oil/ANYTHING ELSE.

+1 for smells like butt :P – tanukicons Jul 25 at 15:01

Seafood...I pretty much hate the sea and everything in it when it comes to putting any of it in my mouth.

I wish I liked salmon especially, I mean when I see the bright red/pink fillet, it looks beautiful, but… keep it away from me!

I also take nothing in the way of Omega 3 oils because of this hate for Sea food, so I need to track down the best Omega 3 capsules to make up for the deficiency.

You know Sebastian from the little Mermaid…yeah...gave me nightmares shudder

Truth.

+1 for being a fellow salmon-hater. I also think it looks wonderful but the taste/texture/don't know what makes me want to gag! I like many other types of fish and shrimp is divine, but salmon - no thanks. – Cheryl Jun 23 at 14:27
Generally love seafood, but salmon is NASTY! Also, who decided tuna should be seared on the outside and raw in the middle? Had to eat around the nasty, fishy tuna chunks in my salad I was served in a restaurant, without gagging. Longest. Meal. Ever. – MathGirl72 Jun 23 at 14:34
Except for tinned salmon. I have no problem with it, but then again, it is fully cooked to death and just tastes like a tin of fish. =) – MathGirl72 Jun 23 at 14:35

Chicken/turkey/most poultry except duck. It's so boring, bland and I hate the texture. It irritates my teeth.

I ate chicken today that was overdone, which makes my teeth stick together when I chew it. Yuck! – MathGirl72 Jun 22 2012 at 23:35
I find the free range chicken is more moist, whereas standard chicken is really really dry. Taste is pretty bland tho, but I dont mind bland food myself. What do you think of the skins BTW? – Jamie Jun 23 at 12:20
Have you tried range raised? Yum!!! – VB Jun 23 at 14:16
@jamie...I find the other way around, sadly. so I don't even bother. Free range doesn't get as fat, so it is worse, so I just stick with other meats. – RaiseFitness Jul 16 at 15:10

I hate chicken. Love eggs though.

OMG. Avocados?! They're sooooooooooooooooooo ... well, if you don't like 'em, you don't like 'em, but that's a little sad. : ( Mixed in a smoothie, tho, and you pretty much disguise the taste (add some choco protein powder, maybe?), and you end up with a yummy, velvety texture.

Kale, for me. Ick. Although I can stomach (well seasoned!) kale chips.

It leaves more avocados for me when people don't like them! I live in California where they are always in season. Yum!!! =) – MathGirl72 Jun 22 2012 at 23:34
i had a dream about avacados once...that's how much I love them. I live in Ohio where they're pretty expensive. I treat them like gold lol. – Andrew Jun 23 2012 at 1:46
@MathGirl72 - I'm moving to Cali next year and I cannot WAIT. Though I won't be in SoCal. Whatever, though. :) My kids would happily eat only avocados and bacon if I let them. I'm going to introduce them to BLT salads once tomatoes show up at the farmers market. – blueballoon Jun 23 2012 at 2:16

I doubt you will have trouble finding avo, regardless of where you wind up in CA. And BLTA salads are awesome!!!!! – MathGirl72 Jun 23 at 13:27

Liver. I just made a chicken in the slow cooker last week and I threw everything in including the stuff in the little bag in the chicken cavity. I ate it all but, I have to say, the liver was yucky! (The heart was ok, though.)

I usually hate liver, but chicken liver pate is DELICIOUS. (You just have to find a good recipe...rosemary, red wine, and tons of butter.) Beef liver, OTOH: GROSS. It's the single most nutrient-dense superfood and I just can't stand it. (I do make it once in a while, but I have to "hide" tiny amounts of it in other things like chili or burgers.) – Amy B. Jun 23 2012 at 4:04
Also: I can't imagine liver in a slow cooker. You're a brave cookie! – Amy B. Jun 23 2012 at 4:05
Well, I didn't know what else to do with it so I just threw it in! Maybe I'll look for a chicken liver pate recipe. Thanks for the idea. – MiMintzer Jun 23 at 14:00

Kidneys. Uck.

I was a vegetarian for 2 years and the first (non-fish) meat that I ate after all that time was some pastured local sheep kidneys. They tasted like piss. Needless to say it was a while before I tried eating meat again. Thankfully I later had a steak (from the same farm) and realized red meat could taste good.

A recent attempt to try kidneys again was proof that I should stick to liver for my offal needs.

That is one hell of a first meat! I'm a huge carnivore and can't bring myself to touch kidneys. I couldn't imagine that being my first foray into meat! Oh, and YAY! liver!!! – MathGirl72 Jun 23 2012 at 0:02
I've eaten lamb kidneys happily only one way--dirty rice (with spicy lamb sausage and a ton of garlic, onions, and chilies). I minced them up. THAT was good. No way in hell I'll eat them on their own though. With something that includes lots of garlic and chilies? Yes, please. – blueballoon Jun 23 2012 at 0:11
What do you expect? They name a bean after it, it has to taste bad. – RaiseFitness Jul 16 at 15:13

I can't stand strong fishy-tasting fish, so I take a couple Omega 3 fish oil caps before bed. For me, food is as much about pleasure as sustenance, and I refuse to eat something I don't like just because it's good for me.

I am right there with you! – Chinaeskimo Jun 23 2012 at 4:14
Omega-3 is better absorbed with a meal. – RaiseFitness Jul 16 at 15:13
My meal is better enjoyed if I'm not having fish burps after it's over. – Alex Jul 17 at 1:27

Liver, although I love pate. I love sashimi, but I don't like cooked fish. I do like other seafood. I love raw cauliflower, but I can't stand broccoli, raw or cooked. And I hate most yogurt, except Liberte yogurt which I love but can't eat because of the sugar. And yeah, I could eat the plain, but c'mon, the mocha, the dark cherry, the coconut, that's the point.

Green smoothies. But mostly I am bored with no brownies, not naughty sweets, etc.

take a ripe banana, and mash it in a bowl, put an egg in it, and then a couple table spoons pure cacao powder, and about a tablespoon of honey. Microwave for 3 minutes, and will be a nice quick paleo friendly brownie. – RaiseFitness Jul 16 at 15:15

Fish. A whole lot of veggies. And a whole lot of meat too, actually. I like most veggies raw, so I guess it's just the structure of cooked veggies I don't like. I am experimenting with buying the ones I hate now anyway, and preparing them differently. I'm trying anything, roasting, steaming, putting them in sauces, etc. So far it's going well.

I already found out that I like spinach, that cauliflower is okay as rice in a nice sauce, and today I am going to try and roast it.

I'm still working on the fish and meat. I bought some tuna because that's apparently the least fishy fish. Haven't had the guts to try it yet though. And meat is more a brain thing I think. I was a vegetarian for a while, and anything that is too "meaty", has bones, or sounds "cute", I can't eat. I'm all for ground beef and chicken, but everything else...:S Yesterday I made some steak cut in small pieces, but it was so chewy it almost made me throw up. I guess I need some lessons in preparing!

I can imagine it would be difficult to start out Paleo as a recovering vegetarian. Stick with the ground beef and poultry for now and use it as "garbage stir fry" like in the recipes at wwww.nomnompaleo.com If you want a delicious pork recipe, try Nom Nom's Kahlua Pork recipe... make sure you use a de-boned pork shoulder since the bones are an issue for you. It is probably the most delicious meat dish evah! :) – Cheryl Jun 23 at 14:30

Sauerkraut! I live in the heart of Pennsylvania dutch country where sauerkraut is king, but I can't get over the smell. I recently tried it for the first time in my whole life and I definitely won't be adding it to my diet anytime soon.

Liver. Kale. Okra. Lima beans. Oh wait, lima beans are not paleo, hooray!

Sardines.

My older daughter won't eat eggs, fish or salad. (But she will eat quiche with spinach...)

Beets. And I'm Russian. Whoops.

But what about a good borscht? How do they make such a delicious soup out of beets? – trjones Jul 16 at 15:05
I still hate borscht. My grandmother made three kinds of borscht, though, one beet, one cabbage, and one spinach. The cabbage was the best. – Laina Jul 17 at 15:42

Really? You mean you don't like the flavor when you cook/fry with it? – Chinaeskimo Jul 16 at 17:10

For as long as I can remember I dreaded eating Seafood. I would have anxiety about being over a boyfriends house and having to force myself to eat his Mom's fish dinners as to not insult her. I went through a stage in my earlier 20's and started re-evaluating my diet choices and health. I made a conscience effort to be more open-minded and start eating foods that were beneficial to my health, even if they weren't my "ideal" food choice. I first started breading my fish, I found that it made it easier for me to get used to the texture and was also easier to eat. Throughout a very slow and gradual process of seasonsing, frying, baking, - WHATEVER it took - I began enjoying fish, and most importantly it was a healthy diet choice. Fish is now a main part of my diet. I would recommend to anyone to try to be open-minded when trying new things and also test out different methods of seasoning or cooking your food. And if all else fails, just hold your nose and know that you're eating something healthy! LOL!

LIVER. Can't stand the stuff.

Eggs :( I know, I still choke 'em down but I'd never eat one for pleasure. Prepackaged chicken breasts give me the heebies.

And BEANS! Thank god paleo doesn't advocate them. Easiest food to give up ever.

I hate avocado, too! So happy to hear I'm not alone. Before trying this Paleo thing, I thought it might be a prerequisite to love avocado ;)

Whenever I try to eat liver, I can't help but think about what a liver does while it's in the animal, and I can't choke it down. I think I'd have the same problem with tongue (thank you, Ramona Quimby), but I've never tried.

I used to like hard-boiled eggs, but I don't really care for them any more. I choke 'em down like Deniz, but it will be a while before I'm actually craving one, I think.
