OK, so my son is Gluten and Diary intolerant, so we have gone Paleo completely. My hubby hates me right now and is having a harder time than the kids.
But my kids mostly my 7 year old boy is SUPER FUSSY! He is scared to try anything, his relationship with food is shocking to say the least.
Im finding breaky to be the hardest one to get him to eat. Before this big change he loved cornflakes or rice bubbles and milk, but he cant have any of that now and is craving it and Im pulling my hair out trying to feed him other things.
Is there a way to give him a paleo friendly cereal? I use almond milk now but not sure what i can put with it thats safe. He hates smoothies, not a vegg fan but looooves fruit as well as nuts and meat.
Please help with recipes, links and info to get him to try new things without the time consuming effort attached to it that leads to tears.
I think you should try to involve him in making his meals. Children his age are in that stage where a feeling of independence is important and feeling "grown-up" might given him a more positive relationship with his breakfast.
Tell him that YOU need HIS help in making the breakfast delicious. Let him be Mr. Chef of the day and pick out certain fruit for yogurt (just an example). Or let him pick out his own omelet ingredients.
Children that age are often overwhelmed with changes and too many choices. It helps to let him feel like he can control his choices. Keep it simple. Don't keep offering five million things at breakfast until he says yes. Tell him that today, "You get to pick! Would you like A? Or B? That's all we have."
Here's a Paleo option for breakfast -- comes out a lot like cereal. I think the youngster'll like it.
Stir to mix. Because it's kids, as long as they're active you don't have to worry so much about the calories here -- and it's a decent breakfast that most kids will really enjoy, even if they're picky.
For a special treat, you could also make Paleo donuts:
Ingredients (makes 10-12 mini-donuts)
1/2 cup coconut flour 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/8 teaspoon celtic sea salt 2 eggs (room temperature) 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons coconut oil (liquid) 1/2 cup warm apple cider 2 tablespoons ghee (or butter or coconut oil), melted – for coating cooked donuts Cinnamon Sugar
1/2 cup granulated coconut sugar 1 tablespoon cinnamon
In a small bowl whisk together coconut flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. In a medium bowl whisk together the eggs, oil and honey. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until combined. Add the warm apple cider to the bowl and mix until fully incorporated into the dough. Scoop the donut batter into pre-heated coconut oil (or, if you have one, you can use a mini donut maker -- but I usually just drop mine into coconut oil -- they don't come out with holes, but that's ok). A cookie scooper makes it easy. (About 1 1/2 tablespoons for each donut) Cook for 2-3 minutes. Carefully remove cooked donuts from the pan. Either brush donuts with melted ghee/butter/coconut oil or dip them in to cover both sides. Roll in cinnamon sugar to serve.
Aside from the great recommendations for paleo breakfasts, I encourage you to think of fussy eating as a habitual behavior that you CAN conquer. There is a fantastic book called "Parenting with Love & logic" that has helped my husband and I immensely.
Toast pepitas, sunflower seeds and shredded coconut in fairly equal proportions. I spray the nuts lightly with coconut oil and toast 10-15 minutes at 350F turning every 5 minutes, the coconut a little less. Toss this with a little ground cinnamon and clove. Sprinkle liberally over berries and drizzle with coconut milk or white fatty liquid of choice.
well if he likes meat and fruit that sounds workable. Keep in mind also that breakfast doesn't have to be your typical breakfast fare (eggs, cereal, etc.). I have this mindset as well and usually have things like bacon or sausage, a couple eggs, and fruit for breakfast, but I've also had meats that would be more likely served for dinner and broccoli for breakfast (not that your son would probably eat broccoli for breakfast (: ) I would stick to meat and fruit and maybe some nuts too if he likes those, then maybe you can fix something else a little more creative and make a deal with him that he will try at least a couple bites at each breakfast. His tastebuds may need some adjusting and this might help. Also, sweet potatoes are yummy, have you tried those with him? They make good breakfast-fare too. Good luck!

I feel you! I have a very picky toddler. My site www.againstallgrain.com has a ton of kid friendly recipes. There's a few with Dairy in them, so just make sure you look at all of the Paleo Recipes in the recipe index. Try the Paleo Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes!! My son loves them!
We make paleo waffles a lot. one banana, 1/4 cup coconut flour, 1/4 C coconut cream, 1 t vanilla, 4 eggs, whizz it all up in the food processor and cook as pancakes or waffles. The other recipe I use is 1/4 C almond butter, 1/2 C applesauce, 2 eggs, 1 t vanilla and 1/2 t cinnamon. They are both delicious!
First of all, don't listen to the haters. Suddenly removing a kid's favorite breakfast foods will naturally make them upset, regardless of whether or not they have entitlement issues. I've found that eating paleo-friendly versions of things I once loved just makes me crave it more. Try to give him something new. Egg muffins are great, think frittata in a cupcake pan. They're great for filling with vegetables. Make them on a Sunday and give them to him throughout the week. I like fried plantains for a quick breakfast or snack. Get him involved! Ask him to help you cook. Take him to the store and tell him to choose a produce item or two and come up with a creative way to make it together. Give him a little control over a situation where he probably feels powerless. And tell your husband to stop acting like a child and educate himself and realize that being paleo is the healthiest choice for your family.

I hear you! I have fussy eaters but its probably my fault because I cant stand the whining from them and make sure I cook something they will eat. ( not saying its your fault its just my situation) Thankfully my kids are hungry and if I can put up with the degrading remarks I get from them all about veg - after a few days of not eat enough food they give in - but it goes in cycles as wear me down again - if only I could be stronger - hey I am human and there is only so much abuse that I can handle doing the meals for ungrateful kids - but I suppose my message is hang in there - if they are not given a choice and they also get involved in the process of picking the meals and help cooking them - it will turn around - IT WILL!
