So my birthday is coming up at the end of July and I would like to make a GOOD paleo chocolate cake. I said 'mostly' because I don't want to be evangelical about being paleo for the cake and ice cream. I think once you've moved on to 'paleo baking' it's really a stretch to truly be paleo anyway. But I personally think it's okay to splurge every now and then and I don't think that it's the end of the world. Actually, if I didn't feel physically sick from eating gluten and dairy then I would just make a regular cake. So basically, I'm wondering if anyone has a really great chocolate cake recipes. I can't tolerate milk, but butter is fine. I don't mind using sugar either, or baking soda/baking powder. I've tried searching blogs, but I haven't really found anything that looks that promising to me.

I think your question is great, and I am jealous I didn't think this far in advance for my birthday, which just passed. I think I am going to have my birthday AGAIN at the end of July and make myself this cake. – Chinaeskimo Jun 24 at 1:23

I'm not okay with dairy. But cheesecake is so yummy that I occasionally indulge and suffer the consequences the next day! – Amanda Aug 19 at 2:46

Flourless chocolate cake: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Flourless-Chocolate-Cake-14478

Coconut flour chocolate cake (personally, I would replace the grapeseed oil in her recipe with butter): http://www.elanaspantry.com/chocolate-cake-coconut-flour-continued/

One with coconut palm sugar: http://untilthethinladysings.blogspot.com/2010/06/coconut-flour-chocolate-cake-with.html

Happy early birthday!

Flourless chocolate cake - eggs, butter, sugar and chocolate. There are tons of great recipes out there. You really can't tell there isn't any flour in most of them!

http://slowlikehoney.net/2012/03/27/the-ultimate-5-ingredient-chocolate-dessert/ I made a flourless chocolate cake very similar to this one last winter -- think I used less sugar -- for a party and it was delicious and very well received. Made a raspberry sauce for it by simmering some frozen berries with honey on the stove top -- yum!

Based on the ingredients,I don't get how it stays together? 4 ounces fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened) 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter 3/4 cup sugar 3 large eggs 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder plus additional for sprinkling – Chinaeskimo Jun 24 at 2:43
It is at all cake-like, or mostly like fudge? – Chinaeskimo Jun 24 at 2:44

I've used a similar recipe - the eggs are very binding and the cocoa powder almost acts like the flour. It reminds me of very soft fudge-like brownies, not any air or lift like a normal cake, but dense and delicious!! – Jackie Jun 24 at 17:21
It's similar to a lava cake! Very dense and rich. – PinkPika Oct 13 at 18:28

This dark chocolate coconut recipe looks good: http://www.primal-palate.com/2010/09/happy-birthday-hayley-dark-chocolate.html

I was going to make it for my birthday but got too busy with other stuff. But I definately want to try it. Any recipe with lots of pictures of the process is a plus in my book!

These recipes look pretty good. I would replace any seed oils with coconut oil or butter. Also, rather than using Agave nectar, which is high in fructose, I would replace it with Grade B Maple syrup.

Check out Flourless Chocolate Cake 1 on All recipes. It has 1/2 cup of sugar but I used only 1/4 cup and Lindt 70% chocolate for the cake and Let it set over night in Fridge. Served with Chocolate Ganache (70% Chocolate with Dash of Cream) thinned or thickened to your delight....or Whipped Heavy Cream and served on the side. most people chose both.

However, this cake is expensive in my book if only cooking for a couple. appx $25-30 just for ingredients unless you canget the lindt bars on sale.

I love the lava cake we occasionally make.

Melt 100 gr dark chocolate and 1/4 cup butter. Add 2 eggs, 1/4 cup almond meal, and 2 tbsp sugar (optional).

We bake at 350 for 15 mins or so, but you could bake it longer to make a non-lava version.

Do you bake this in smaller ramekins, or one (8x8?) baking dish? – PinkPika Oct 13 at 18:33

I adapted the one from America's test kitchen and it turned out really good. I don't add sugar - just chocolate, eggs and butter. The picture doesn't look so nice but here is the link anyway (http://baconfiend.blogspot.com/2010/05/over-top-lunch.html)

There are quite a few really great recipes out there - depending upon what taste / feel you want. The one above is dense and very chocolatey (definitely for grownups). But there are versions that are more cake like or airy.

So, for an airy option, layer a nut crust with chocolate mouse. I did that for a birthday and it was very yummy.

try this chocolate cake/brownie. I even left out butter by accident and it came out nice. dont think you need oil or butter because it's nut flour not regular (something to do with gluten issues) of course, if you want more greasy, then go for it. i make this for my kid and she is a picky eater and approved, even with half stevia in it.

2 cups almond flour/meal 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp vanilla 1/4 tsp salt 4 eggs 1/2 stick (2tblsp) butter or 1/4 oil (optional) 1 1/4 cup sugar (i substituted by using 1/2 sugar and 8 packets of stevia leaf extract) 1/2 cup water (if using any liquid sweetner, reduce water or eliminate altogether)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8 or 9 inch cake pan or brownie pan. Mix all dry ingridients together in one bowl. In another, mix all liquids then add to dry bowl. I did not use an electrix mixer since i didn't own one - used hands and whisk to stir for a few minutes to blend.

bake for 25-35 mins at 350 deg. or stick a toothpick in it, if it's clean, it's done. DONT FORGET TO GREASE PAN...Otherwise, you are gonna eat crumbs :-)

nutritional facts: with stevia version. 1/8 of cake or 1 of 8 brownie (calories: 280; Protein 10g; Fat 18g; Fiber 4g; Carbs 20g) (keep in mind this is a slow digesting snack compared to typical sugary muffins/cake with regular flour and sugar. – Bibi Oct 13 at 17:48

How paleo is xylitol or erythritol? – Amanda Oct 14 at 23:20
I wouldn't imagine it being very paleo, but the point is that these natural sweeteners do less damage to the body than sugar and that it is to be treated like a treat and to be had occasionally. – Thomas Oct 14 at 23:52
