Hi there!

So I've been doing the paleo thing for about 2 months now, and in the past I've always pretty much eaten clean, basic, whole foods so it wasn't a hard transition for me. However, two weeks ago I started bartending again, working 5 nights a week, leaving my house around 1:30 and not getting back home until around 1:30. I don't have much time at work to eat a meal, and have been taking smoothies and larabars but they're not really cutting it. I'm starting to lose a lot of weight and I feel pretty exhausted ALL THE TIME.

I'm looking for nutrient dense, energizing, easy to eat (or even better, drink) meal ideas. Any of your favorite smoothie recipes, suggestions for paleo approved protein powders (if they exist!) or other quick meal ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

boiled eggs, canned fish (sardines, tuna, salmon), easy to eat veggies - cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, fruit, dried fruit, unsalted nuts. That's what comes to mind. – VB Jun 27 at 19:08

Beef jerky is another excellent choice. I just cooked up a batch last week using 3 lb of lean London broil, coconut aminos, and spices. I vacuum-packed half the batch for later. Delicious.

Here's the recipe (it calls for flank steak but you can use London broil, top sirloin, etc...): http://beta.primal-palate.com/recipe/beef-jerky/

great recipe! Thanks for sharing! I wonder if I could use it to make turkey jerky? I love beef, but I find it hard to digest. – browneyedbluues Jun 27 at 21:33
I would imagine so. Pick up some fresh local turkey at a farmer's/community market and go to town. The dehydration time might need to change. – TraneTrax Jun 28 at 11:15

Have you tried making yourself a bag of plantain chips for a change up? You could bring a tupperware of guacamole or mix up whatever dips you'd use (hummus, baba ganoush, mango salsa, etc.) Plantains are carby and should help with your exhaustion.

btw I make a batch of these when I know it's going to be a busy day, and I'm not going to have a chance to sit down and eat.

Trader Joe's, if there is one near you, has organic beef jerky for $5. It has a little bit of sugar but could be a good solution. I know how it is working in restaurants/bars- it is go go go and you hardly have a chance to eat anything! If you do get a break in your shift I'd suggest bringing along pre-made salmon salad (wild canned salmon, celery, carrots, mayo, mustard) and storing it in the fridge until you get your break- it always fills me up and I bring along my tooth brush and brush my teeth before going back to work!

i'll have to check that out, a trader joe's is opening close to me in a few months! the salmon salad is a great idea! I'm so used to eating salmon salad in lettuce wraps, but with a spoon on a 5 minute break would definitely be a viable option for me! Thanks for the idea! – browneyedbluues Jun 27 at 21:35

I eat so many boiled eggs it's ridiculous! I find that they're easy to make and I just pop a few in my lunch for work to snack on. I also found egg white protein powder with coconut milk will hold me down for a while, too.

Hard boiled eggs are totally a staple of mine, I just get so bored with them! Egg white protein powder, eh? Any specific brand you recommend? – browneyedbluues Jun 27 at 21:37
amazon.com/Vitol-100%25-Protein-Vanilla-40oz/dp/… It's called Vitol, I like it specifically because it's low on sugar and carbs. I found mine at a local health food store or you can order it online. – Alex Jun 28 at 15:44
