I eat cheese several times a week, a dash of heavy cream about once a week and ice cream sometimes too (I know, I know, not primal... pure indulgence). I eat all these things with no apparent reaction.

However when I consume milk, about 50% of the time I do get a reaction that I believe is allergic. I only have milk about once a month, some months none at all, and try to make it organic and whole (no raw in my area). I had some last night in a sauce I made, probably consumed around 1/4 cup, and this morning my throat is slightly swollen and sore, the back of the roof of my mouth feels tender and my breathing feels laboured.

I have gluten intolerance so already some autoimmune stuff going on. My question is, should I really be conscientious about absolutely staying away, or might it be better to keep consuming small amounts to potentially get used to it or keep from getting a more severe reaction? Also, why don't I react to ice cream but milk out of a carton I do?

I would stay away. If you repeatedly get the sore throat thing when you consume milk, that seems like and allergy to me, but I am not a doctor.

As Roth said, it would be a good idea to take steps to heal your gut, but that is not a cut and dry proposition either. Best of luck to you.

Yes I've done an autoimmune protocol in the past, and feel like my gut is healed or at least substantially on it's way. Thank you for the advice to stay away from it. I guess it isn't helping anything, is likely hurting me, and totally avoidable. Thanks! – Lynn Jun 28 at 17:09

If you have an allergy to something you should try to totally remove it. Also do you get the same reaction from goats milk? Goat's milk is often a good substitute for standard cow dairy. For some reason it seems to cause less reactions.

Unless you heat your leaky gut, you won't get "used to it." So stay away. Your body may however be in a state of chronic inflammation and because of that some of the effects might not be as noticeable because you've got 50 other things going on that might "silence" your body's screams to stop eating dairy.

Go on an autoimmune diet, get your issues in order and then you can have high-quality, preferably fermented dairy.

I agree- It will just further damage your gut. I know how hard it is though when you aren't entirely sure you have an allergy. I am the same with dairy. I have a reaction to milk, even raw goat milk- but none it seems to sheeps milk yogurt- no reaction it seems to butter but a huge reaction to cream etc.. so it makes it tricky to mentally make the firm decision to cut it out- whereas with gluten/wheat I was becoming so ill that I ditched it years ago and have never looked back and that was a piece of cake...I've read dairy is addictive so that may have something to do with it. – kris Aug 8 at 22:01

One suggestion if you have a hard time parting with dairy would be to buy a yogurt maker and make your own yogurt and ricotta cheese- but ferment it for 30 hours. Body Ecology Diet and GAPS both have recipes for yogurt made this way.
