IDL Cholesterol: 7 mg/dL range: <30

Remnant Lip. (IDL + VLDL 3): 16 mg/dL range: <30

Clinical consideration:

Probable Metabolic Syndrome: No

Sub-class Information:

HDL-2 (most protective): 18 mg/dL range: >10

HDL-3 (less protective): 62 mg/dL range: >30

VLDL-3 (Small remnant): 9 mg/dL range: <10

LDL1 Pattern A: 7.3

LDL2 Pattern A: 40.3

LDL 3 Pattern B: 63.5

LDL Pattern B: 11.0

LDL Density Pattern: A

Anybody have a clue what this means? I'm assuming, the high LDL is bad coupled with the low HDL, but I'm not entirely sure. For reference, my physician is a paleo guy and finds these cholesterol tests hilarious. He wasn't really worried at all about my LDL.

Your doctor has more of the context and baseline health parameters than you are giving here. What is your height, weight, etc. and other metabolic profile values? A rhetorical question, not necessarily expecting full or any answer.

Hypothetically, within the lab high and low limits for TG, LDL and HDL you might still have a problem. I have read that for most people HDL alone and HDL/TG are the key factors, higher being better.

One time ten years ago I had two "cholesterol screens" two days apart. The only difference was that the first one I had a cup of green tea in the morning, the second day not. The tea raised my TG and HDL each by 30 and total cholesterol by 40 points. But I assume my health was as good the first day as it was the second. Reading Volek/Phinney's book Low Carb Life I finally got a good explanation why that happened.

I was hoping to see some other person's answer explaining all the other lab results but maybe your doctor did not pay attention or explain those either. Make him earn his inflated salary!

The Trig/HDL ratio is 0.98, protective is less than 2. So I think he's ok there. – CD Nov 14 at 16:51

your HDL is not low. they are looking for >= 40 mg/dL and you have 80. Your LDL appears to be fine, not remotely close to the worrisome range (plus we don't really know what high LDL is). Also Pattern A is good, here's the great wiki:

LDL particles vary in size and density, and studies have shown that a pattern that has more small dense LDL particles, called Pattern B, equates to a higher risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) than does a pattern with more of the larger and less dense LDL particles (Pattern A).

Of course none of this matters as much as your doctor, who has knowledge of other risk factors and your general history, is not worried!
