So I have been having some great success with Paleo since kicking this thing off. I forgot my lunch this morning...I know...dangerzone, right? So I needed something. I got a mediterranean chicken salad with no dressing and very little feta. They sent two pieces (relatively small) of pita bread, lightly toasted. I decided to eat them since I was doing so well and feeling so good. They were very tasty and a nice treat.

So it got me to thinking, what do people do to treat themselves occasionally?

And I stress little feta. I have lactose intolerance issues so I really have to keep myself away from cheese...for everyone's benefit. :-) – SCUBABry Jun 28 at 23:18

I get a pedicure or a manicure. Unfortunately, my relationship with food is still horrifyingly precarious and if I reward myself with food, I will spiral out of control very easily.

Oh yea, I would totally fall into that category if I was ready to reward myself and went into a Dunkin Doughnuts. A Mani-Pedi sounds like a great reward. My wife has been after me to get one! I may have to try it when I loose another 10 lbs. – SCUBABry Jun 28 at 23:22

One pt for MathGirl for knowing her weak spots! :-) – SCUBABry Jun 28 at 23:23
Math girl, I am the same way – Chinaeskimo Jun 29 at 0:37

Good point, MathGirl72. That's the only Weight Watcher's point that makes any sense - do not use food as a reward. Other than that, WW has very little going for it. ;)~ And I can say that as a Lifetime Member 4 times over. LOL – Cheryl Jun 29 at 1:06

First rule: it must not be consumable. Feeding my disordered dopamine reward centers with sensory stimulus in response to positive feelings is NOT something I can perpetuate in a healthy sense.

For me that looks like: taking off early to make it to a yoga class, taking some time alone to relax and regenerate, getting a massage, generally making time for myself in whatever form may be desirable: writing, hiking, reading, talking with a friend, calling my mom, laying in the hammock, sewing, cooking, going dancing...

I think that unstructured time to pursue whatever feeds one's inner sense of happiness and contentment is an extremely valuable (and overlooked, in modern society) part of the human experience.

Ice cream is my cheat food.

A scoop of fancy ice cream at a shop, no pints lingering about in my fridge. Or, a regular beer, which I have to take a gluten blocker for. But, I don't think of it as a reward, just as a special treat once a month.

A pint lingers at your house? I think those little pint cartons are one serving per. – Ralph Furley Jun 29 at 0:23

I want to know more about this gluten blocker! – Jen Jun 29 at 1:07
@Ralph Not so much that a pint lingers, but haunts me from the fridge.. If I buy a scoop, I only eat a scoop. Plus, its a nice treat to enjoy by myself out and about. – Crabbycakes Jun 29 at 4:18
@Jen Yes. Its this amazon.com/MRM-Gluten-Free-Consumption-60-Count/… It still causes intestinal damage but eases the symptoms. I use it mostly to try new products I carry at work (beer and wine buyer) – Crabbycakes Jun 29 at 4:22

I booked a spa day last time, and also treat myself to smaller things as rewards e.g. nice workout gear. Like MathGirl, I don't go down the path of food treats. Therein lies disaster for me. :)

I reward myself every night by drinking several glasses of red wine.

Slight exaggeration. But wine is my one weakness :) Other than that I am pretty strict paleo. – AnarchyCaveman Jun 28 at 23:58

I love some red wine myself. I also found that sparkling Desani and Captain Morgan make a for a nice treat some nights...and very low cal! – SCUBABry Jun 29 at 1:08

Never with food, then again there is nothing I want that I don't eat... I just don't crave junk or grains anymore, ever - which is nice!!

If I need a reward for myself I will buy a magazine or a book or a massage or a new top!!!!!

EDITED for full disclosure..... I do have buttered popcorn now and then!!

+1 for massage and new clothes as rewards. Books work too, as do magazines- as long as it's the Economist or Playboy. – foreveryoung Jun 29 at 1:58

lol... not exactly buying Playboy here - although my husband might like it if I did! – Crowlover Jun 29 at 2:06

If I say I read Playboy for the articles, who will believe me? Ha. – McKenzie Jun 29 at 8:58

My treats happen when I go home for holidays or vacation. I never, ever, EVER pass up mama's cooking, even when it's homemade biscuits, cornbread & chicken and dumplings.

Chocolate covered banana bites XD A few times I tried to reward myself w a regular ol' mocha frap (no whip, smallest size) - but every time I have found myself running for the bathroom. Even once, at a family function they had lumpia (basically an egg roll) and just ONE had me nauseous for the next DAY! - Other than that, I'd say sushi ( :

Those coffee mug cakes are my current treat. Still fairly Paleo, even though it's a treat.

My fav rewards that are healthy:

a lazy day on the couch a lazy day outside napping in my chair hammock walks long bike rides a cup of Starbucks coffee dark chocolate sitting in my portable infrared sauna watching netflix stuff

It probably sounds cheesy, but how I feel regularly now, and how I'm beginning to look is seriously the biggest reward.

Long term rewards for really sticking with my life changes (diet, exercise, really taking care of myself) will be tattoos that I've wanted for a long time.

My rewards are generally a) not food based, because the concept of a "cheat" makes me go all eating-disorder-y b) cheap, b/c je suis broke. So usually a BATH with plenty of epsom and a sock full of oatmeal (the only good use for it, as someone who has never liked cereals). Alternatively, a one-hour no-interuptions stint of reading a novel with a glass of wine.

Green & Blacks white chocolate!

Oh come on, where's the dark chocolate. – Chelsea Jun 29 at 12:12
Who needs dark chocolate (which is disgusting! ;) ) ... when you have white chocolate? – Celton Jun 29 at 13:05
Which isn't chocolate! Blech =) – MathGirl72 Jun 29 at 14:49
