I am kind of ticked off by this actually. I was just watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgEE5DJ1vgA&feature=relmfu and at 0:30 and 3:52 I saw something that made my jaw drop. It shocked me because, I was raw vegan(not fruitarian) before and vegetarian before that and it seriously ruined my health. I have mentioned this in my other posts, I also mentioned that I had blue nails, blue sclera, beaus lines etc., so when I saw that this raw low fat(fruitarian style)raw vegan made this video called "Why vegan is important" and clearly has BLUE NAILS(not nail polish), I had to wonder. Don't vegans notice their nails or other markers of health like eyes, hair etc? My question is what are some reasons that blue nails occur, and have you noticed this symptom when any of you were raw vegan/vegan(there's quite a few of you)? I kind of feel bad for making this post but I hope other people see it(including vegans) because I wish I would have seen something like this when I was going to get into veganism. Now I am trying to recover from the damage. Sorry for the long post.

I checked out that video. They don't look blue to me, sorry. They look okay, just a little chipped (short) but nowhere blue. I also have a question for you - I hope it is not off topic but I really really want to know - why do people become vegetarians? I could never understand it and nobody can answer this question so I can understand. Is it because the meat in the US does not taste good? I mean, I cannot even imagine life without meat or fish. How can it be possible for a person to think of that? – VB Jun 30 at 6:49

I was vegetarian for most of my life because I didn't like the taste of meat. My husband was a vegetarian for 33 years for ethical reasons. He's a buddhist and wasnkt convinced that eating meat was good for the environment. I gave him 'the vegetarian myth' and he's now eating meat with me. Yay! – MrsD Jun 30 at 7:23

@VB: Even after 18 months of eating meat (and veges, fats, starches- real foods, in general) for two to three meals a day in my workplace, I get regular comments on how I'm such a "healthy vegetarian". The average person in this country thinks that vegetarian and healthy are absolutely synonymous! – raney Jun 30 at 8:43

I was feeding a squirrel in a park the other day. OMG, it looked so tasty! – VB Jun 30 at 11:56

I reviewed the video at the time points you mentioned and the nails do not look blue to me...they look perfectly fine.

The only thing I have ever heard of that causes blue sclera is some types of osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease).

They look blue to me – HuntingBears Jun 30 at 11:41
I didn't see any blue nails either. – RawNut Jun 30 at 11:42
They look a little blue. But it could also simply look that way because it contrasts so much with her tanned skin. – Walcott Jun 30 at 15:38

Blue nails usually mean that the blood is low in oxygen.

Holy Cow (no pun intended), but I'm sure you can get by on such bad nutrition when you look like you haven't lifted anything above 5lbs your entire life. This woman needs some meat(again no pun intended) on her bones.

Sometimes I wonder if Vegans and vegetarians would change their minds about their lifestyle choices if they actually exercised. Maybe then they would realize their plant-based diets are in no way optimal for a human being that actually sweats on his time-off.

There are many vegan athletes, including competitive weight-lifters and ultra-runners. My best guess is that it's fine for a while, until it's not. – Karen P. Jun 30 at 16:07
@Karen P. Or it's fine for some people? I was dragged into vegan eating habits by a vegan acrobat/dancer, but for me it was downhill, getting ill, sloooow recovery, tired, etc; but she thrives on it perfectly, already 20 years and, although much shorter than me, she is way stronger ;) – TerraGuy Jun 30 at 17:04
@Karen, yes that's true I don't dispute that, but I do believe they're more of an exception to the rule. If it worked so wonderfully and was the optimal diet than more athletes would adopt it. – Rob Jun 30 at 18:27

When I had markers for lupus, Sjogren's syndrome and Hashimoto's (after a severely long period of malnutrition due to a stomach probably - almost 6 months of less than 200 calories a day, most of that was fruit juice), my rheumatologist told me to look for blue colored nails (which I had) and cold hands, cold body temperature as additional signs to the progression of the autoimmune conditions and thyroid problems. All of these antibodies have either disappeared or moved into ranges that aren't considered a diagnosis after just a few months of re-feeding and getting my strength back. I know that blue nails can also be a sign of Raynaud's syndrome too, another autoimmune disorder, but usually it is very severe (like whole fingertips turning blue). I didn't see the blue in the video thought.

As we all browse on the internet for speculated opinions and blind assumptions we have to ask ourselves where are the facts? and why is it hard to find the facts. Well its quiet easy, not only the meat and dairy industry completely run the western media market they also engage in search engine's filtering system. Which means even your search results are being channeled to favor these industries.

Before the internet there has been a wide range or studies on plant based diet vs the western meat consuming diet. These studies have taken 20+ years to complete and are now easily accessible to those who actually use the internet for what its worth. Undoubtbly we arnt told that more people on this planet live off of a starch / plant based diet so it becomes quiet apparant that the societys that do consume a meat/ dairy based diet have a dramatic increase in many of the epidemics we see today in the west. Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer... These diseases do not come close to the fraction of occurances in a plant based society.

Besides the fact that all of our meat and dairy is tainted with a enourmous amount of terrible chemicals, hormones that have been deliberately bribed into our food system with zero publicity. It becomes quiet apparant that the system is bent on damaging large scale health and to generate alot of money in the process. Large scale problems can only be corrected by government intervention. (Isnt that what we are seeing in the first place )

But what it all boils down too is propaganda. These industries have infultrated our schools, our literature, our minds! We have been conditioned to a animal based diet to be accepted as a social norm. But wait, "Milk is good for building strong bones". Ever hear that one before? Well goes to show that those "Got milk" ads where made illegal for false advertisement and has been proven in more then 100 studies that Milk does the complete opposite to your bones! It makes your bones weaker!!!!

One small truth can uncover a mountain of lies. I wonder what else they are lieing about ;-)

"But what it all boils down too is propaganda." I agree. And it looks like you have succumbed. Take a look at the top 4 foods subsidized by the federal government: 1. Corn, 2. Wheat, 3. Soybeans, and 4. Rice. theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/07/… The meat and dairy industry must make the gov't give the grain/legume industry more money as a way to hide their control over everything! They are truly diabolical! – Todd B Aug 23 at 13:17
