Im 18 and iv turned semi paleo. Full paleo for 2 days and then some oats after the 48 hours is up to satisfy cravings, however im looking to eventually cancel oats out. Anyways, people such as my parents think im too health conscious and are getting annoyed at me being paleo. Obviously they do not really no why its healthy etc. I too also get frustrated when they consistently eat grains such as pasta, minimal veggies etc. The reason why i get frustrated is because im their son and i don't want to see them suffer unnecessarily from chronic illnesses which can be prevented through the paleo diet. My mums already got digestive problems and my dad is just about pre-diabetic. If this is them now, what the heck will they be like 15-20 years down the track? It just worries me and makes me sad. Im the intelligent person thats looked upon as crazy. What can i do? i try to educate them but they don't listen or they otherwise yell and a verbal fight breaks out.

Maybe two days on the diet is a little too early to convince the oldies that it works. Just quietly get on with being Paleo and in time they will notice the changes in you and start thinking for themselves. Meanwhile, just keep shhhh. |

Kudos to you for going Paleo even though you parents are totally SAD. I would not worry too much about it. I know exactly how you feel. I love my mom more than anybody else in the world - she is not only my friend and my inspiration, but also my spiritual twin. We are that close - I don't think other people can even imagine being that close to their parents. However, my mom eats more carbs (mostly gluten) than any other person I know. I cannot say her diet is very bad, it could be much worse - at least she keeps her sugar intake low. But still, she has osteoporosis, metastatic cancer, digestive issues and numerous other health problems. My brother (who still lives at home) is a type two diabetic and my dad has numerous health problems as well. I had many conversations with her, but the final result is always the same: I end up eating my cabbage and she makes more cookies. So, let me explain another thing. Imagine that you were raised in a Catholic family and then, at some point of your life, turned Buddhist. While everybody else attends Sunday mass, you would read your mantras at home. Do you think you will be able to convert the rest of the family to Buddhism? Think realistically. There is absolutely nothing you can do, except for keep doing what you believe is right for yourself. Nothing else. I am sorry to break it to you, but people do what people do. PUT YOUR NEEDS FIRST. And your needs are - eat as healthy as you can and take care of your well-being. Remember what they say on the airplane - put your oxygen masks on yourself first. |

People hate to be told what to do. In fact even if it's better for them they will often be more resistant to trying it just because someone else suggested it. I gotta agree that setting a good example though your actions and health over time is the best way to get them to reconsider their diet someday. |

Paleo is a personal choice. Hell, even Primal (Sorry to mention it here), is a personal choice. For me, Paleo/Primal was a way to take my OWN health into my OWN hands. Its easy to sound preachy when people ask you about Paleo because its easy to get defensive when people question your new lifestyle. I learn new things about foods daily. I learn things about foods that Paleo endorses that make me question some of Paleo. You'll find Paleo is about catering it to yourself. It's not a cult, and you don't have to drink the cool-aid to be part of it. For the first 30 days, I would try a removal of main NON-PALEO items. Maybe even try going almost "Whole 30." Treat it as a detox and stick to it, it's worth it. You'll find once your body is getting what it needs it will rarely ask for what it "wants." Unfortunately for both you and I, we were programmed to have a predilection for fats, sweets, and salts, because those things contained vital calorie sources that we could store to help us survive whilst running from lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!). The ultimate thing is to eat food, only food, and all of that other stuff that other people eat, you need to to psychologically train yourself that "That isn't food, I can't eat it, It will make me sick." I have to do this with donuts, bread, etc... The biggest thing is that you should let people make THEIR OWN decisions. People don't want to hear about what is killing them. The healthcare bill passed the other day and it is going to cost me for all of these other people EATING THEMSELVES TO DEATH. It's going to cost a lot of us. You just have to handle your own life and let others handle theirs. If people ask you about it simple say "I really don't know if you want to go into this. People typically get defensive when I tell them about my life choice to go Paleo, so I would rather just keep my personal life decision to myself." If they push you further and honestly are curious, then by all means, share with them, don't preach, and KNOW YOUR STUFF! Get reading about WHY you eat the way you do. Don't let Paleo become a fad. Don't let it become just another "DIET." Remember, Paleo is a lifestyle! Although the campus I life next too doesn't appreciate when I run half naked across campus to club a deer to death during the middle of spring session... Best regards, keep strong. Dont give in to cravings, but don't deprive yourself. A treat every once in a while never hurt anyone (Do it responsibly though)! I think there is already some good advice on here for dealing with the issue, small steps are probably good and just leading by example, stick to it and maybe they will begin noticing that you are onto something. Your concerns over your parents' health reminded me of Robb Wolf's story about trying to convince his parents to change their dietary habits, I don't know if you've read it before but here is a link to it: http://robbwolf.com/2012/04/04/paleo-diet-convince-it/ I'm sure you can relate to his feelings so maybe it'll be a good read for you. Best of luck :) |

Diet is like politics and religion - it can be tough to discuss. The best thing you can do is lead by example. I have gotten ripped since Paleo, and people notice and ask questions. PARENTS Parents can be hard to turn to the paleo side. They can be stuck in their ways and are supposed to be the ones showing us what to do. Simply telling them science about food that goes against what they have been told by professionals isn't going to be very convincing. What you need to do is show them information backing what you have found with validated sources. This and showing them how it can change your physique (through self changes) they will see that this is something worth trying. Start small, I have my parents eating grass fed beef now and always have a salad mixed in the fridge. They still eat bread, but it is a process. It took me 4 years going thru college and experimenting before I found the paleo diet was right for me. www.paleodietevolved.com if you want to learn more about the paleo diet while adding muscle. With this "functional" paleo diet, it includes potatoes and rice which is a good substitute for grains without all of the glutens and other toxins. Good luck |
