I have this new love of eating limes and lemons. To me they taste sweet and I actually eat the citrus and suck out the juice. Is this normal? Does anyone else do this? Do I have some vitamin deficiency? Maybe I'm overlooking this but every around me tastes them as sour and looks at me like I'm crazy. Thanks

Sounds really bad for your teeth

Why would that be? – YoungPaleoLover Jul 2 at 10:16

Um, citric acid? Wears down your enamel? Citric acid and vinegar are some of the worst things you can bathe your teeth in. livestrong.com/article/… – Nemesis Jul 2 at 10:57

Just drink a glass of water afterwords and swish it around your mouth if your worried about acid. I'd be more worried abouthte acid that comes from the bacteria that sit on your teeth for hours between brushings. – scottts Jul 2 at 14:15
Agree w/Scottts. Some mornings I start my day with a big glass of water with some ACV and fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice in it. (Sometimes a tiny bit of stevia, but usually just straight up.) Very good for alkalinity. But I swish plain water around my mouth afterward. (P.S. The drink described above is a great way to make lemonade -- just lots of fresh lemon/lime in water, leave out the ACV and add natural sweetener of choice.) – Amy B. Jul 2 at 16:08

It's always been said that Lemon juice is high in acid content, which causes enamel erosion and other dental problems. However, it (like Apple Cider Vinegar) is highly alkalizing IN your body but could potentially have harmful effects if exposed to teeth?

How true this is, I'm not sure. However, I eat lemons and limes (slices) but I just make sure to avoid letting it touch the front of my teeth as much as I can (by focusing on chewing with my molars.

Enamel erosion happens throughout the mouth, not just the fronts of your teeth. – Nemesis Jul 2 at 10:58

I can't do this but this is FABULOUS that you can.

Keep eating them - they are very healthy and good for you. Okinawa's centenarians all eat limes. You are just healthy enough to eat them, that's all. Everybody around you is still on SAD, right?

Unfortunately yes. It is heartbreaking to see people I love eating so poorly and know how it is negatively affecting their health. There is nothing I can do either :( – YoungPaleoLover Jul 2 at 10:16

I love lemons and limes too but I don't go out of my way to eat them. Just the slices in my carbonated water or garnishes on food. Fortunately, my mouth is very basic (did pH test). I say go for it. You can always chase it with some water to dilute the acid.
