What are your plans to stay primal and celebrate this Independence day?

I'm gearing up for an ice cream competition so will be churning away, am hoping to take tomorrow off from the 'scream. None of my friends plan in advance but I'm sure something will turn up. If not? Then its me, my dog, and a picnic - charcuterie and other fun small bites - in the park :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 3 at 17:58
I am going to a friend's lake house for a cook out tonight, and then tomorrow I am seeing David Gray at a local music festival. The solid things I'll be consuming will be paleo friendly, but my beverage selection will not be so restrictive. – foreveryoung Jul 3 at 21:35

Hang out with my tribe, go for a hike, watch the lights in the sky, eat the meat, veg and fruit, don't eat the non-food, play with the kids.

mmmmmm......... first off, meat and veggies on the grill. I like to keep the heat outside (and not in my kitchen), esp in the summertime. Also, I came across a great blackberry cobbler dessert featured in Everyday Paleo- http://everydaypaleo.com/2010/06/18/blackberry-cobbler/

However, my non-paleo boyfriend thought it would be a bit better if the topping was chunkier and the berry portion was... gooier/ stickier. So, I tweaked it- and found freezing berries (i used raspberry, blue and black berries helped create a gooier consistency on the bottom, and adding chopped walnuts into the topping satisfied his need for more chunk... and it was a TOTAL WIN!

And of course- 4th of July we're going on a midnight kayak in the Hudson River (NYC) and then celebrating tomorrow with a long bike ride in Central Park.

Happy Independence day!

That sounds awesome! - Side note; what does your bf think of you being paleo? – paleono Jul 3 at 17:20
Very self- contradictory. Any time I eat, he'll remark "they didnt have that 10,000 years ago," or will remark that I cant go out to eat anywhere. However when I cook for us, he remarks how tasty the meal is, and compliments me beautiful I have become since changing my eating (I lost 30 lbs). So, at this point, I think he's learning to appreciate my lifestyle (and perhaps soon embrace it too!) – PaleoJD Jul 4 at 16:32

Grilled flank steak, steamed broccoli, spinach salad, and fresh pina coladas (fresh pineapple, coconut milk - chilled, so I can use just the heavy cream - ice and of course rum). So pina coladas are obvi not paleo (they had Blendtecs back then, right?) but we can enjoy an indulgence every now and then, depending on current health goals and personal diet guidelines. Down with tyranny!

Ribs and pulled pork shoulder. Slow smoked beginning the night prior. Kicking back at the house with my family and a few friends and a few brews. I don't worry about the side dishes....thats what the beer is for.

Got a firework ban on right now due to the drought so just chillin.

Grilled grass-fed flank steak, cheesy onion mashed goodness (raw cheddar and green onions in mashed cauliflower) and a big green salad with avocado and tomatoes from the garden. Activities will include house cleaning (fun, right?) and swimming with my clan.

Paint the walls of my cave.

Keep the cats inside, and be a comforting (book-reading) lump on the couch for them when all the scary noises start. Frankly, I don't like the fireworks any more than they do.

Eat a ribeye steak, a caprese salad, and...dunno what else, yet.

Call the cops/911 at least once when the stupids in my neighborhood drink too much cheap beer and get even more stupid. I suppose the paleo solution would be to knock them over the head with a club, hurl rocks at them, or skewer them with a spear, and my deepest primal instincts tell me his is a correct course of action. But since that is generally frowned upon these days, I include calling the cops as part of my 20%.

Starting with a moonlight trip out in the kayaks tonight. Tomorrow, hopefully a hike or nature walk followed by a BBQ at a friend's place. He makes lots of grilled meat and fish. I'm bringing a vegetable dish. And probably some sangria.
