Some people have mentioned various phases they have progressed through during the continuing months of eating paleo. For instance, for myself, I noticed that at first, I was very hungry on paleo and snacked often, but still lost weight. Then as the months passed, I could go longer and longer without hunger or any obvious side effects (no fatigue, etc). Also, at first I craved protein and fat. Then I just craved fat. And now just recently, I crave fat much less than previously. So what kinds of phases and craving changes have others passed through while eating paleo?

I was WAP for about four years. Low on grains for WAP but did a lot of dairy, and occasional grains and nuts.

Went paleo but kept dairy in for about one month of time.

Quit all dairy and have never gone back.

Decided to selfexperiment and went all-animal-product, ie no plant matter, for three months.

Have now come back to straight paleo, ie no grains, no dairy, good meat, good mostly green veg. As an aside, just to keep omega6s low i don't eat any nuts or seeds either.

Ben, could you tell the reason why you never went back to dairy? What was different after you quit all dairy? Just being curious – Pieter D Oct 30 2010 at 14:04
I feel like i just don't need it. At the time i also thought that dairy gave me bad skin. in retrospect who knows, couldve been the grains, both, etc. Skin irritation was a big big reason that i initially even started researching food, WAP, eventually paleo, etc. Now also knowing that a lot of dairy is at least somewhat insulinotropic keeps me away. Also, getting raw dairy would be somewhat of a hassle for me, though doable. So, in the end i just dont need it, dont see it as any better than good meat and veg, and am wary of pasteurized dairy. – ben61820 Oct 30 2010 at 23:05

Time-line of my diet's progression:

  • SAD
  • Carnivorous Paleo
  • SAD
  • VLC Paleo
  • SAD
  • Paleo (+ dairy)
  • Paleo (eliminate dairy except for pasture butter)
  • Paleo (low-carb at ~50g/day + pasture butter) *where I am right now

In the future I plan of dropping the butter and trying a diet where I eat only pemmican for lunch and slow-cooked low-heat high-fat stews for dinner.

  • Felt good, less hungry sometimes. Often thirsty.
  • Energy sapped, muscles sore. Thirstier.
  • Carbed up a little, felt better and less thirsty but extreme exertion (lifting) still very hard
  • Body is adapting to less carbs, but still slightly more thirsty and fatigued than normal

Any tips? I've been lower-carb for just over a month, and paleo (plus occasional dairy) for 2 weeks. I don't really crave anything over the last few days, because I am so satiated on so little food. Butter tastes nice when I eat a little solid, and a few things really taste good (cheeseburger with butter) but food in general is a bit less appealing.

It's amazing how diff it is between people. I was very much less thirsty right away on paleo, but it did take a while for a certain amount of intermittant fatigue to pass. After about 3 months, I was feeling good though. May be you just need more time to adapt. As long as you continue to improve, that is a good sign, IMO. – Eva Oct 31 2010 at 4:21

Well in the beginning, I still had a carbish diet. I was pretty hungry, and always snacked. I also ate a lot of almonds and fruit. then I learned to like fat, but I would binge on it too much. I am binging less now, and have recently upped my starch a la perfect health diet. I had wicked dark chocolate cravings in the middle too, and thankfully those seem to have subsided. I also ate a lot of bacon in the beginning/middle, but it doesn't really appeal all that much to me anymore.

Yeah, me too. Used to really like bacon more. Now I am more attracted to beef, but will still snap my teeth onto some bacon if you dangle it in front of me. ;-P – Eva Oct 31 2010 at 4:23
