So I asked a question earlier about my dog who is always starving and will eat anything. I concluded that maybe he needs more fat in his diet. I started offering him a heaping tablespoon of my Artisana Coconut Butter twice a day (he LOVES it) but I quickly concluded that it really was too expensive at the rate he was going through the jar.

I went and got him his own jar of "cheaper" coconut butter made by Spectrum. Offered him some last night (and this is the dog that will eat anything) and he made a face. Offered him some this morning and he still made a face. In fact, offered it to the other 6 dogs currently in residence (who like Artisana) and they would not touch it either.

Now I trust my dog's instincts...But Spectrum is a solid brand name. Any thoughts?I just cannot figure out what could be wrong with this jar of coconut butter? Anyone else use Spectrum? Anyone want to buy a slightly used jar of coconut butter?

Artisana Coconut Butter is about $15 per pound. I am used to $3.04 per pound at Walmart and about $2.00 per pound at my local giant Asian market. But that is coconut oil. Coconut butter looks way more paleo, way more holistic, and just plain healthier than coconut oil. But I can't afford it. I will wait until the rest of you bring the price down by buying it, which I encourage you do. (:->)

LOL, my dog is a SNOB! Good thing we work so hard so we can afford to feed him, ;-) – Chinaeskimo Jul 4 at 18:02

You gave them Spectrum "coconut oil". Perhaps that is why?

Oh, oops, I will edit and fix that. It is butter, not oil. Thank you! – Chinaeskimo Jul 4 at 18:06

I think one brand has more fat than another. I noticed that the Coconut Butter has less fat than the Coconut Manna and the Coconut Manna just a little less fat than the Creamed Coconut. Perhaps that is the difference between your two?

Well....That's got to be it! I don't have a better explanation, and Mr. Bear is not talking. – Chinaeskimo Jul 5 at 2:14
