Hello all, I started palo in February. So far my energy is great, and I'm dropping weight. However I have some interesting side effects. On one hand, I handle hot weather so much better. However does anyone else feel like they are more photosensitive? I've always been fair skinned, and burned easily, but once the summer went on, I would adjust. Now, every time feels like the first time. Also, I have lost my taste for wine, but increased my taste for beer and spirits. Has anyone had these effects?

I can't say that I feel you on the heat/burn issue. Then, I live in the South with 100+ degree temperatures and high humidity, so that's probably an extreme case, and I am very very careful not to let myself burn, as I am incredibly fair-skinned, too.

Your alcohol preference changing, now that I get! Beer and most spirits are made with grains, so your body may just be missing them.

I don't have a certain answer for your question, but I have a thought. I know some foods (like celery) contain melanin which can help you tan, not burn. Maybe you were eating something before that had a high concentration of melanin, or some other substance that helped you tan, not burn.

That's actually rather interesting. I know a fair number of people (myself included) who've noticed increased sun tolerance, with even the palest of them being able to go out for hours without burning. Do you eat a lot of nuts or consume a fair number of PUFAs in general? Or perhaps your body is just adjusting to not using sunscreen anymore. Does that sound like it could be the case?

I have no idea what to make of the alcohol thing I'm afraid.

Agreed....I can't seem to burn now. – RaiseFitness Jul 19 at 17:18

When I started eating paleo four or five years ago, I immediately noticed I could handle heat much better. I sweat a lot less than I used to. As far as I know, the body produces less heat burning fat than it does burning carbs.

As for sun, my skin has always been tolerant, so I can't say if anything's changed.

I swore I was having early pre-menopausal symptoms (I'm 41) the last few years...one reason because of less heat tolerance and night sweats. But I'm maybe 2 months since I switched to Paleo and even this 100 degree stuff we've had here in Louisville the last bit isn't bothering me so much. Last summer I would have not even ventured outside. And I'm getting my old "I'm always cold" feeling back.

I always have burned easily (fair, freckles, light red hair)...that hasn't changed that I have noticed.
