I've been very low on energy and muscle recovery following a very low carb/ high fat diet. Would introducing a couple of sweet potatoes every day help me out?

Why not start with one and see how you feel? – Dave S. Jul 5 at 14:10
We recently had a power outage for 4 days..I had been eating nothing but canned salmon, olive oil, spinach, carrots, and coconut oil for 4 days. I finally broke down on the 4rth day and ate some pizza my roommate brought home...I noticed I felt 100 times better and I never even got sore from my rough workout. I figured i needed to start eating carbs (not pizza of course). I did feel bloated and fat from the pizza but at the same time I felt more energized and muscular. – Andrew Jul 5 at 14:53

Every body is different so what works for me may not for you, but I strength train 4 days a week with some CrossFit and Japanese sweet potatoes and tubers are my jam. It took me months to get the right ratios down so just pay attention as you go. If you have trouble try playing with other starchy veg as well such as carrots and beets, some fruit. Here is a list that I found online super quick, obviously just select what will fit into your diet :) livestrong.com/article/… – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jul 5 at 14:55

In a word, yes. If you're working out and at a normal weight I don't see much reason not to have a moderate level of carbs.

Post-workout is generally the best time to have starchy carbs like that, though. It'll help with recovery. – Christine M. Jul 5 at 4:15
Yeah and it'll require less insulin to lower your blood sugar after exercise – Jeff Jul 5 at 4:57
Pre-work out will help with performance. – peter Jul 5 at 9:30
Pre workout hurts performance, post helps. – animaleater Jul 5 at 12:08
I feel fat and bloated but I feel stronger and have more energy at the same time...I think its worth it. – Andrew Jul 5 at 14:48

It would, but another macronutrient that you should pay attention to in this case is protein. Have you made sure that you're eating enough protein first? Not enough protein is sometimes a problem with females since their previous diets usually steered them away from meat due to the "high fat" content. As a male it could still be an issue and you not know it.

Also, that many potatoes might give you constipation as it did for me. I have salmon after workouts and that works great for me. If I want more carbs, I have some dates. – Diane Jul 5 at 12:46

Most likely but the best way to find out is to try it. Best case it works, worst case it doesn't and you stop.

Agree with Rob, make sure your protein intake is sufficient first.

Was VLC/ZC for five months. Felt great mentally, but started to lag a bit physically (after initially improving). Sure rested/fixed my metabolism.

Went leangains two weeks ago. 16 hr fast and BCAA pre workout. Downed a kilo of sweet potato (340g carb) with lean beef (over two meals), post workout days only. Rest days stay in ketosis with meat and fat only.

Has worked wonders. Sleep, recovery, mood, libido, all improved. Workouts, I've broken three personal records in two weeks. Surging!!

Bottom line: PWO, great, at rest, either before WO or other day, no good. Carbs work best when your body is hot, sweaty, worked, and ASKING for carbs.
