I am not a huge fruit eater. I am not against fruit, I just prefer vegetables. I do eat apples a couple of times a week, and sometimes a banana before or after exercise, especially if I'm getting leg cramps. I eat berries, but I can stop after just a few.

But fresh local cherries, those are a special case for me. I wait for fresh local cherry season every year. This is the first cherry season that I'm fully paleo, and today I ate too many cherries. Oh well.

My question is, is there a seasonal produce item that is your downfall, that you wait for and how do you behave? Do you eat too much of it? Avoid it at all costs? Just go into denial that you have a problem and then do damage control?

Same thing used to happen to me. Eat your heart out. Eat some for me too, I can't eat cherries :( – VB Jul 5 at 7:28

To be honest, cherries just taste better than most other fruit. If you're worried about carbs, it's to be insulin sensitive. Part of that requires some small exposure to sugar spikes occasionally, so yours is from cherries. Dig in. :) – raydawg Jul 5 at 9:57

Cherry season doesn't last forever. Cherries are a real food. Eat the cherries. Enjoy them. Stop when cherry season is over. Don't freak out about it. You'll do FAR more damage to yourself stressing about it than you will enjoying a bunch of cherries.

I go crazy for wild blackberries, every year. As in, I don't even care about the ticks, the mosquitoes, the thorns, or the snakes, I am out there, in the field, picking and eating happily.

I don't stress over it. Really! I eat as many as I want (which is a large amount!) fresh while they're in season, and preserve/freeze the rest to use for the remainder of the year. It's only a few weeks, so even if I felt it was harmful to me, it is for a relatively short time span.

Go for the noms! Don't forget that it's still a whole food, there are a ton of actually bad things you could be eating, and just try to keep what you consider over-consumption limited to the season.

I do too, I love wild blackberries! Whenever I go on a hike or a horse ride, it's between me and my animals as to who can engorge themselves on the most berries! We also have wild huckleberries here too which is a different splurge. – LastingOne Jul 5 at 16:47

I have a thing about blueberries, and there is a "pick your own" place near where we go in the summers. Last year we picked 11 pounds and i probably ate 10.5 of them. Fortunately i froze the and so they lasted a while, but i probably over did it.

In terms of the paleo diet, it seems very likely to me that our ancestors binged on ripe berries and fruits that they found when they were in season so i wouldn't really worry about it too much unless you have specific health or weight loss goals that would be derailed by a few weeks of fruit eating.

I'm sure you're right. I am still trying to lose weight, so I do have to practice some sort of discipline. I don't feel too horrible, though. – Crowbar Jul 5 at 17:02

Ditto the berries for me! Fresh local berries arenot even comparable to store bought! Also, fresh ripe peaches! Oh em gee. I go nuts but try to make my fruit "last" by rationing it if I can't get it close to home :p

Cherries and blackberries are my weaknesses. I do still buy them fresh because the season is so short and TRY to refrain from eating the entire flat in one sitting, but don't always manage to. =)

I know, it's so hard to just walk by them. Cookies and stuff, I don't even see as food anymore. I can walk by a chocolate display without batting an eye, but the cherries are a beacon. :) – Crowbar Jul 5 at 17:00
I first read "bacon" instead of "beacon." I totally agree with either noun; they are a beacon that calls to me and as addicting as bacon. =) – MathGirl72 Jul 5 at 17:18

Did anything bad happen to you? I mean I've pretty much been only eating fruit because the weather is so hot that it destroys my appetite. And nothing bad has happened at all and I feel great. Cherries are real food, are pretty low in sugar, and have pits so it's not like you can truly overeat them.

No, nothing bad. I am trying to keep my carbs under fifty, but I am generally pretty good about that. I just don't want to go too crazy. :) – Crowbar Jul 5 at 17:01

Ah, yes cherries. I used to eat them by the bowl. A big bowl. Full. I found out that sticking to eating mostly berries was much more productive in terms of weight loss. Now I count out 5-10 cherries and eat them voluptuosly one by delicious juicy one. Today I passed cherries up in the market because they weren't perfect. Ohh, that felt good. I ate a bowl full of raspberries instead. Lost a bunch of weight in the last few years and have kept it off. Mostly because I don't eat processed fake food and keep fruit to a minimum.

Nothing more true to our nature and biology than eating seasonally, as long as they are ripe on the trees where you live, go to town!

Actually picking them yourself might be where you want to draw the line, instead buying a flat if you wanna keep it really real. We have a cherry tree in our yard, and an hour of climbing on ladders will yield a good sized bowl, or just jumping and reaching I get maybe 5. So sitting down with 2 pounds of them without having to do any work might not be the best.

I am hanging out for cherry season so I can make some delicious recipes! Even more-so than cherries though... I am absolutely desperate for Mango season. Will be buying loads and freezing the mango cheeks for use in smoothies through next winter. Addicted to mango.. and I will eat as many as I like. Ultimate indulgence.. and it's still real food even if they are a bit sugary.
