Yesterday I developed a killer headache. I haven't had one in months. The only thing that was unusual was that I made a pie (nectarine-blueberry if you must know) for my family. Did not eat any of it, but did have a little of the gelato that I served with it. Can just breathing in flour cause a migraine? Ack...I took 3 ibuprofen during the night and 2 more a couple of hours ago and it still hasn't gone away!

What exactly was in the gelato? – Sarah Jul 5 at 20:40
Milk, sugar, cream, dextrose, vanilla, lemon, and guar gum. Small amounts of ice cream have not bothered me in the past but this is a different brand. – MiMintzer Jul 5 at 21:25
Oops, except that I'm a little lactose intolerant but that wasn't the problem with this. – MiMintzer Jul 5 at 21:26
BTW, I went to the gym for my workout and had a little coconut oil before I left because I was feeling so draggy. I feel much better now. – MiMintzer Jul 5 at 21:30

Yes, it can. I get migraines from gluten too, and if you are really sensitive flour is more than enough to do it.

It seems that the longer I have not had gluten the more sensitive I have become to it. Wondering if I should get tested to verify the sensitivity. – MiMintzer Jul 5 at 21:22

unless you're really really sensitive, i'd say it is something else. stress...pms (if you're female...this is my one guaranteed migraine)...smells from other things.

Any of the fruit you were dealing with...any of it a little on the squishy side? I'm highly sensitive to mold so that does it to me, too. Sometimes i get them from walking through produce stores or farmers markets

Certain cleaners...

Make them another pie and find out! :)

Not pms...I'm 54 and beyond that now. The fruit was ripe but definately not moldy. All the cleaners were ones I've used before. But I'm sure they wouldn't mind another pie, lol! – MiMintzer Jul 5 at 21:18

I have found that any stress can trigger a migraine. Wheat flour is definitely a stressor for any human being, whether they know it or not, since we are not genetically adapted to wheat.

Well, the only thing I can think is that when I was rolling it out I poured too much flour onto my surface and I used my hands to remove it. Accidental ingestion of the flour particles in the air? – MiMintzer Jul 5 at 21:20

It is not always easy to determine the cause. Reaction to food additives/preservatives may take up to 1 or 2 days. Also a combination of stressors can trigger a migraine or cluster headache. Nitrites and other food preservatives and flavour enhancers affect me. Hormone levels in pre-menopausal females may also come into the equation.
