I got the So Delicious brand coconut milk (I know it contains additives but I got this before I learned how to make my own coconut milk). Why does it taste soapy? Is it due to rancid fats?

They all taste varying degrees of soapy to me. So far the least soapy is aroy-d in a box. It tastes the most like fresh coconut. I doubt it's from rancid fats. I would guess coconut contains some natural saponins or something. Edit to add: Oh yeah, coconut is high in lauric acid, which is soapy. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is a surfactant often found in shampoos and soaps, is derived from the lauric acid in coconut. |

I am not sure about soapy, but I tried So Delicious coconut milk and was really disappointed. It tasted very sour to me, even though it was fresh. I have not bought it since. |

Golden Star coconut milk has only two ingredients: coconut and water. Does not taste soapy at all. I have tried the Goya, Thai, etc. and have found this brand to be the only coconut milk in a can that actually tastes GOOD. I think the funky taste you are getting is from the gums added to thicken. Golden Star doesn't have this taste. I don't use any of the refrigerated carton variety milk replacements to make a comment. |
