I searched along these lines, but found nothing that came close...

So, what foods or macronutrients have you confirmed to be worst for you? Top 5 (or a few more if you can't help it). I know individual results will vary, but it will be interesting to see what comes up consistently.

I couldn't actually come up with 5... just 4!

  1. Wheat- yeah, the gluten really kills my tummy! Unfortunately, sometimes I do still want a sammich. It is what I have cut out of my diet most recently, so hopefully the cravings for that will pass. (Not saying I will never ever ever eat wheat again, but I have got to at least take a few months off it.)
  2. High fructose corn syrup - that was the first thing I cut out, several years ago, back when I was still on the SAD and lowfat/wholegrain/SAD-healthy diet. The taste makes me feel sick enough, but if I were to actually drink a Coke or something, I will certainly pay for it. The temptation for that has passed!
  3. Soybean oil - pretty much all commercial mayonnaise and salad dressing has it, and I feel really bad after eating that stuff. No desire for that stuff anymore!
  4. Artificial sweeteners - Splenda, aspartame, saccharin, you name it. Not only is the taste disgusting, but they kinda make me feel weird. Not sick to my tummy, like HFCS or soybean oils, just... I guess mentally off? It's kind of hard to explain, but maybe someone else here feels the same way after eating that stuff. I am done eating anything containing them.

I agree on the artificial sweetners. Whenever I drink something or eat something that uses one I just feel off... not quite right and a little cloudy. – Malache Jul 8 at 16:55
when the craving is really bad, try a coconut wrap or gf bread! you can still cheat and save the belly! – Rebekah Jul 8 at 23:26

Sugar. Any amount of sugar makes me want me more sugar and more sugar and more sugar in this neverending cycle that ends with donuts and fries and mozzarella sticks and more cake.

So, sugar = junk 24/7 and then I lose my taste for anything more nutritious.

i'm a sugaraholic...I used to eat like a pound of candy after trick or treat night. I didn't stop until I felt sick. I wish my parents were a little more on top of their game.. Now I still like sweets but I never touch them so i don't have a problem – Andrew Jul 7 at 21:40

@barefeet: Hang in there! @Ryan: me too! and my parents would feed my dessert and candy and cake! – Chinaeskimo Jul 8 at 2:42
sugar is only bad if you are overweight or have diabetes – HuntingBears Apr 15 at 23:50

1: ONIONS - I cannot handle them, (I get very bad IBS) and I found out that onion intolerance is actually quite a common complaint. I also have a bad reaction (but to a lesser extent) to garlic and leeks. I actually only found this out after I kept a detailed food diary for two months - but it has totally changed my life in terms of my intestinal problems for the better.

2: ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS - unbearable, why anyone would want to eat that stuff, I have no idea; I get headaches, nausea, you name it and yes, weird 'mental' things.

3: COFFEE - I love it, but oh, does it do bad things to me.

4: SUGAR - not as bad as artificial, but pretty close.

Here are the top 4 foods I try to avoid: 1. All grains, especially wheat, soy, and corn because these are huge endocrine disrupters (spking both insulin and leptin). Grains also contain alot of anti-nutrients and allergens. These reap havock on the intestinal tract and contribute to IBS and leaky gut. Wheat, soy, and corn are typically GMO which should be avoided for multiple reasons, fertillity in particular. 2. Heat treated oils (corn, canola, soy, seed and nut oils). There is strong evidence that these processed oils cause atheroscolosis and impede cell respiration. Oxygen depleted cells become cancerous and anerobic, which then feed on glucose. 3. Sugar, because it spikes leptin and insulin hormones and readily forms AGEs (advanced glycated end products) by combining with amino acids in the body. 4. Fructose, because it is shunted to the liver as a toxin. Excess amounts lead to fatty liver disease which attributes to leptin and insulin resistence. Small amounts of fructose found in high fiber fruits like berries are fine in moderation.

I'm just going to go with my 1x/week indulgences as the worst since I will not be giving them up:

  1. Beer - Still refuse to switch to wine or liquor. Nothing like a good microbrew

  2. Pizza

  3. Actually thats it.

  • Cheetos (fried not the puffy)
  • Funyuns
  • Bugles (The ones you eat not the ones you blow)
  • White rice
  • American Chinese food (most)

I agree, the puffy ones are nasty...fried definitely somewhat tasty. – Andrew Jul 7 at 22:01

I love/hate cheetos. It has got to be the least healthy thing that I crave. (:->) – bachcole Jul 7 at 22:05

I love that you separated Cheetos, Funions, and Bugles into different foods. They must be really important to you :) – legup Jul 8 at 5:15

For me it's the combination...the gruesome twosome...Wheat and dairy together, it destroys me! My gut will be hard as a rock though I will still feel hungry and all I want to do after eating the two is sit there and do nothing.

It's always surprising to me that I let that feeling go on for as long as I did, I guess it just had something to do with wheat and dairy being good for you, so that meant my lethargy and hard gut meant I felt GOOD...right?

Truth.

  1. Anything deep-fried
  2. Anything carbonated
  3. Oats
  4. Sugar
  5. Gluten

In that order. Greasy deep-fried food or any fizzy drink = instant stomach pain and intense bloating/gas for the next day or so. IDK why oats affect me so much worse than any other grain (and steel cut oats are especially bad) - more than one or two tbsp and they make my stomach look like a beach ball and get me constipated for days. Sugar is pretty self-explanatory; gluten doesn't make my stomach very happy but nowhere near the level of the other 4.

Oddly enough, I have no issues with rice, corn, barley, and other non-gluten containing grains that aren't oats.

You might like homemade kefir. It will be good to you health-wise, and it is carbonated, naturally without pressure. – bachcole Jul 7 at 22:06
I have the same problem with oats. I made myself eat them when I was trying to be "healthy" before Paleo because I was told they were good for me. Terrible idea. One packet of instant oatmeal felt like I'd just eaten an entire buffet and it didn't want to leave. – Varelse Apr 7 at 16:00

  1. Seitan- it is what it sounds like 2. Soy protein isolate (this and gluten jack up my guts for days, and also inspire folks to ask "when the baby is due." 3. Ice cream/milk 4. Peanuts- I crave them often and can easily overdo it. They hurt my stomach, but once I start eating them, it's hard to stop. 5. Corn- I find this to be the most addictive non-paleo foood I eat. A few bites of popcorn one day makes me crave tortillas and soda the next
link|flag
3

  1. grains--not sure which ones exactly, don't care to find out
  2. eggs=migraine
  3. onions=migraine, esp. red onions
  4. PUFAs: too much omega-6 (canola oil, safflower, etc., esp. commercial salad dressing)--I believe they are inflammatory to my system, putting me at greater risk for migraine
  5. trans fats or rancid fats; again, the inflammation issue

My neuro chides me about caffeine, but I've been 3 weeks 2 days sans migraine and I have an energy drink every day (Blue Energy, no artificial sweeteners). 'Cause I gotta get stuff done.

brie, doesnt like me....(just this one for some reason)

soy-allergic, dont eat it

beef-allergic, dont eat it

artificial sweetners, make my stomach purge immediately

corn-can't go to the movie theaters because I can't have popcorn (the only real thing that makes me really really sad is missing popcorn-it makes me pretty sick but I don't think of that when I smell it...)

  1. Wheat/flour -- causes joint pain, rash, and just found out it causes migraines
  2. Broccoli -- love it, it doesn't love me back
  3. Cow's milk -- see above, but goat's milk is ok as is cow cheddar cheese
  4. Sugar -- if there is ice cream around, well, it won't be for long! causes cravings
  5. ? -- something makes my lips peel but I haven't figured out what it is yet

(1).Pizza--Once I pop i don't stop...Until its gone. However my last pizza binge (during an extended power outage) made me feel great. I came to the realization that I need Carbs for recovery. I'm now eating white rice and sweet potatoes after my workouts.

(2). Ice Cream- Its delicious. Now i just eat frozen blueberries with coconut milk and nuts. Not as tasty but it gets the job done.

(3). Almonds--- I know they're paleo but I get addicted very easy. I can eat a pound in one day if i'm not feeling very good.

(4). Oatmeal---Oatmeal, Blueberries, almonds, and total cereal mixed together is like crack. Unfortunatly i used to think it was healthy crack...But i started wondering why i would get hungry 45 minutes after eating a huge bowl..Did some google searches & found the paleo diet.

(5). Whole grain bread and peanut butter--Once again like crack (especially when you think its healthy)

One thing I don't miss is cold cereal...I used to eat 3-4 bowls a day. I have no urges to go back.

Anyone who lists ice cream gets a +1. – bachcole Jul 7 at 22:01
Funny about the cold cereal. My devilish son deliberately got in my face with a peanut butter sandwich on white potato bread. I was not the least bit tempted, even after 5 days of fasting. Bread is just too lame for me now. But I had to put away the fish baked is butter. That almost derailed my fast. – bachcole Jul 7 at 22:04
haha same.. I have no interest in whole grain bread bread. It's pretty much birdseed to me...but back in the day it was delicious. Some things will never lose appeal like Ice cream and pizza haha but bread is not one of them. a 5 day fast? that sounds extreme. – Andrew Jul 8 at 1:19

Wheat (it's the only grain I have noticeable problems with, although I avoid the rest to keep to low-carb overall)

High Fructose Corn Syrup (actually, it's any sugar, I'm afraid, but it's nice to have a nice long unnatural-looking name to blame---I've compared sodas made with cane sugar to those with HFCS and the results are the same as far as their effect on me)

Artificial Sweeteners (I just don't like the taste... I haven't noticed any other issues with them, though, so I'll drink them when nothing else is available)

Decaf Coffee (I don't know why, but decaf coffee makes me dizzy and nauseated, but regular coffee is fine--better than fine, it's great!)

Oreo Cookies (Because of how much I used to eat these and how tempting they are to me, they are in a category of their own. Even just one makes me feel awful, but I can't seem to resist eating a whole package if it's open).

Beans and Legumes, including Soy, are also especially bad.

I don't have any intolerances or allergies, so all the 'reactions' I have to foods are psychological (except for some dairy which gives me a noisy, bloaty stomach - more embarrassing than anything else). However, I literally have no off-switch for two things:

Refined sugar - anyone who's seen the bit from Finding Nemo where the vegetarian shark gets a whiff of blood will understand the unedifying carnage that takes place when I eat sugar. I gave it up because I have no - and I really mean NO - control over myself around it.

Bread - again, I gave this up over a year ago and I can count the number of times I've eaten it since on the fingers of one hand. But even now, if I decide to 'treat' myself (and I don't even know why I call it that since I consider MANY genuinely nutritious foods more of a treat than bread) that addictive quality it has grabs me by the throat, and I could just eat more and more. Especially in combination with salted butter!

So yeah, no PHYSICAL reactions but really powerful addictive reactions which make it very clear that I need to avoid these foods completely. No food should cause you to be so out of control. If only I could convince my equally-addicted friends and family that the fact that they say they could 'never' give them up is the first sign they should!

My son, who claims to love me, is only 13. But he makes wickedly delicious brownies. I am particularly fond of how he puts chocolate chips right in the batter. Sometimes we eat the batter raw. Does that make it paleo?

Perhaps some of you know of a paleo brownie recipe.

I have these in the oven right now: beta.primal-palate.com/recipe/… Hubby and son are taste testing for son's birthday party next weekend. Tried a different recipe last night and they were promptly dumped. NASTY! – MathGirl72 Jul 7 at 23:07

Soy- highly allergic

Rice- makes my guts hurt, makes me fart a lot...

Peppers- shoots through my body not digested, not sure if an allergy

Sugar- makes me crazy for more!!!

Dates- so in love with dates, but only one makes me crazy for about 10 more and makes me as crazy as sugar. I had to break up with dates.

If I've been a good boy for a week or so, any sign of wheat or other grains will at least make my stomach rumble an hour or so after eating. Otherwise, nothing really bothers me. Except movie theater popcorn! That shit is so damn good, and buttery, and salty, and oily, and all that combines to give Jared gas that does not end, nor smell good. So, despite my obstinate love of movie theater popcorn, I refrain from eating it. Which isn't hard because I no longer go to the movies like I used to (once a week with my father), as it is not even close to being in my budget.

So,

  1. Popcorn

  2. Gluten

However, the things I cannot control myself if I buy them:

  1. Chocolate of any sort.

  2. Yogurt of any kind (almond, greek).

  3. Any sort of nut butter (peanut or almond).

  4. Cottage Cheese-no matter how stern I am with myself when it goes into my cart, it is gone within 24 hours, if not 36.

  5. Any food that doesn't require much work to consume. I purposely make sure to buy food that requires even a modicum amount of work to be eaten as then I don't binge, or eat because I'm bored.

  1. Squash: Instant diarria/IBS everytime I touch the stuff.

  2. Onions: Make me fart a lot, not a fan.

  3. Cashews: For whatever reason once I open a huge bag. I CANNOT stop eating them. Delicious, but my GI tract and waistline certainly pay.

  4. Beer: Similar to above, one beer turns into 10. I cannot stop.

  5. Coffee: Probably wouldn't be so bad if I didn't chase energy with it and drown it in pints of cream.

Taste wise I eat pretty much anything, but I can't stand:

  1. Most artificial sweeteners make me feel nauseous

  2. Margarine .... yyyyyyuck!!

  3. I don't really like the taste of coconut milk/cream, especially when compared to cow cream!

  4. Soy products

  5. Because I have celiacs whenever I eat a decent serving of gluten the roof of my mouth and gums seem to become inflamed which is quite painful and puts me off eating it.

In order of worst to least worst:

  1. Vegetable oil: Even as a child, years and years before paleo, fried foods made me feel so sick. The strange thing is, and I would be interested if someone knows the answer to this, I am made especially sick by protein cooked in vegetable oil. I can eat french fries and feel fine (less so now since going paleo) but fried meat makes me feel like I have the flu. Meat prepared any other way does not do this. Why is that?

  2. Sugar: Again, even pre-paleo this made me feel really sick. Cake is the worst. I can't stand cake because it always made me feel so awful. For some reason, cookies and candy didn't have quite the same effect. I get a little now in the occasional dark chocolate bar but I have really lost my taste for it.

  3. ? - (stealing this from MiMintzer above) Some mystery food is still causing a really strange rash / break out / scaling on the side of one nostril and other breaking out. It is a stubborn very red irritated area covering one nostril that WILL NOT GO AWAY. It is making me insane.

  4. Nut butters: so sad. I cannot explain it. I can eat nuts and feel okay, but as soon as it is churned into creamy deliciousness, I get ill.

  5. Wine / beer (GF) / coffee / whiskey: These all get the same category at the end because, inexplicably, I am occasionally able to tolerate them absolutely without issue. Sometimes the first sip of wine gives me a raging headache and I feel horrible the next day. Sometimes I can have four glasses and feel fantastic. Sometimes coffee makes me so jittery and anxious, other times it just makes me happy. Sadly, whiskey makes me sad way more often than not.

  4. Seed Oils
  5. Darkness (if you consider light to be a nutrient)

I find all the mention of "sugar" comical. I'm in no way advocating eating large amounts of sugar/donuts, etc, etc, but tjhere is sugar in quite a few things I (and possibly you) eat (dark chocolate being one of them, even 99% dark chocolate, very little but nonetheless). Some dressings and other foods have sugar in them. Now, eating high sugar content foods or adding sugar to dishes should always be a no no (or approached very cautiously). Just sayin......... ; )

With that, my list is as follows:

1) Flour (white/wheat, the crappy ones)

2) Wheat

3) Oats (oatmeal, granola and the like)

4) Junk oils (vegetable/soybean, etc)

5) Imitation/artificial sweeteners (Splenda/sucralose, Sweet N Low, Equal/aspartame, although I occasionally use Truvia and Stevia, so sue me, lol) and High Fructose Corn Syrup (ya, that might be considered #6, ah, who cares, lol).

Wheat: I don't know? Maybe because I am a celiac? Oats: I feel like I can't breathe after I eat a spoonful of the stuff. its pretty serious. Dairy: Nausea etc., but its a delayed reaction, sometimes takes like 18 hours. Corn: Very recent allergy! Last time I had corn pasta for dinner (yes a cheat :[) I was in so much pain. I had a hard time getting to sleep. Soy: Bloating and other unfun stuff from trace amounts.

Some interesting findings of mine:

  • When I drink Sodas I can feel my head bloat and will cause some inflammation that lets me feel pain in my damaged sciatic nerve that I normally can't feel.
  • Artificial sweeteners will give me an instant killer headache
  • I used to eat oats a lot but I was getting heart burn and tooth aches from the phytic acid I guess.
  • Olive oil just sits in my stomach and makes me feel ill. Maybe I'm cooking it wrong or buying it expired.
