Hi everyone, wish I could offer a bounty for this right away because it is SO important :-(

My uncle was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer and had surgery to remove his esophagus. He is now on a feeding tube and probably will be for months until they are sure the cancer is gone. Not sure yet if he will have to do chemo.

He has lost ~25 lbs in the two weeks since his surgery and was not a big guy to begin with. I know food can't cure cancer but after all he has been through I can't watch him starve to death. My aunt is sort of on the right path, feeding him lots of freshly juiced organic produce, small amounts of puree'd meats, and rice and grains. I have offered the paleo schtick but she is not ready to place her husband's life in the hands of an internet subculture (no offense). I have tried to look through PubMed but am having no luck, maybe I don't know what to search for.

This is what I need my Paleohacks friends to help me with. Personally, I would love for the guy to get some fat in the form of pharmaceutical grade MCT oil or organic coconut oil. I'm wary of what it would do to his body, though, as I know it can cause diarrhea. Does anyone know of some good research to send my aunt, regarding this or other things you would find helpful?

Thanks in advance, Lauren

I would check out GAPS soup recipes for nourishing feeding tube/ soup ideas. adding pastured egg yolks (you can make it in to a lightly cooked custard with cream if you are concerned about raw yolks) to the puree. Egg yolks are one of the most easily assimilated forms of nutrition out there. Maybe some fermented cod liver oil and butter oil blend to a smoothie with lots of coconut milk?

(Edit) I also found this older thread asking a similar question: Paleo with a feeding tube?

Food can cure cancer!

Firstly I would remove all forms of carbohydrates from his diet, as the mitochondria in cancer cells doesn't function and so they can only use glucose for energy, but not fats or ketones. IE he needs a ketogenic diet.

PubMed has many studies on ketogenic diets really helping cancer.

Ensure lots of protein and fats. Protein is needed to prevent muscle loss which is so common in cancer, keep the immune system strong, and to detoxify. The liver needs protein is get rid of toxins, and cancer makes a lot of toxins. In Campbell's rat studies, the high protein rats did get pre-cancerous lesions, but the low-protein rats all DIED!

There are many other things that can help, listed here: https://sites.google.com/site/retrofoodrevolution/articles/conditions/cancer

I would recommend blending the foods (meat, organs, fats, etc) in the gelatinous broth and feed this via the tube. The gelatin may cause some difficulty though so may need to be watered down or the liquid heated beforehand.

Coconut oil can cause diarrhoea, as you've said, but in general if you start with a small amount and increase slowly there is no problem. Coconut oil is more easily digested than other fats and doesn't require bile for its digestion either. It is also absorbed directly into the blood (rather than via the lymph system) and goes straight to the liver where it is turned into ketones for a quick energy boost.

Probably obvious... but if you're heating broth, be sure it is cool to at least body temperature before feeding it! – jess6 Jul 13 at 13:47
Food cannot cure cancer. I have advanced cervical cancer. Tell me what foods will cure me? I do believe food can prevent cancer, and I believe food can help, but I do not believe food on its own can cure cancer once the mutation exists in the DNA and is spreading. – Chinaeskimo Jul 14 at 5:34

Chinaeskimo, just as with anything if it's bad enough nothing will work sadly. I didin't say it always cures, just that it CAN. If I was in the same position, I would follow what I said, take a huge amount of vitamin C (cancer patients can take well over 100g with no bowel flushing), and vitamin B17. More on B17: video.google.com/… (but I don't agree with the dietary advice in this video) – DePaw Jul 15 at 22:03

Robb wolf covered this a bit in a podcast, and while I can't remember exactly what was said, I know they're doing some work on this in japan. He mentioned some kind of ketogenic solution. If you look for the podcast about the guy who broke his back skydiving you will find it. The research is out there, suggesting that it may be beneficial for patients on feeding tubes to be in ketosis.

You need to starve the cancer cells of glucose- have you heard of the maple syrup and baking soda cure (please look it up). And it would definitely look into the ketogenic diet (can be found on a variety of reputable sites in the mind of the SAD dieter or ill-informed person, even mds) if they are not prepared to accept the woes of paleohacks. It is so great that you are trying to improve his health. Keep going:) It will be an uphill battle.

I think that, really, your answer needs to be very specific to your uncle, not just general.

For that you would need to see or consult with someone alternative or complimentary. They would probably do blood work and then make recommendations.

I currently have advanced cervical cancer. I have done a lot of research, but different cancers can be very different, have different pathway mutations, work in different ways. Even the same type of cancer can be caused by different things (although it always comes down to a pathway mutation that affects cell division). If you truly want to understand I would recommend reading the book "Cancer, The Emperor Of All Maladies."

Do you have someone in your/his area? Do you need help finding someone? Let me know, I am happy to help you.

Your question confuses me, do you want feeding tube meal ideas, or just research?

Also, why just coconut oil? Why no animal fat?

And paleo ketogenic diet is not just a "internet subculture" thing, there's lots of research on it, even John Hopkins hospital does it for cancers and seizures. (Edit: looks like it's not necessarily "done", but they have some information on it; see comments)

This page has a lot of links to research:
- What causes cancer.

Of interest:
- Help convince my dad with cancer to try a ketogenic diet.

(I'll update this post if I find more information)

Luisa, I have advanced cancer with a bad prognosis. If you have info about Johns Hopkins recommending a ketogenic diet for cancer I really need it to show my oncologist and to see it for myself. Please post the link with the information. – Chinaeskimo Jul 14 at 5:45
P.S. I searched online and could find nothing about JH using a ketogenic diet for cancer. For seizures yes, for cancer no. – Chinaeskimo Jul 14 at 5:48
From JH Website: Says they ARE NOT putting adults on a ketogenic diet hopkinsmedicine.org/neurology_neurosurgery/… Epilepsy Diet for Adults The modified Atkins diet can be used successfully for adults and can be started at Johns Hopkins through our Adult Epilepsy Diet Center. At this time, we are not starting adults on the traditional ketogenic diet. Learn more about our Adult Epilepsy Diet Center program. – Chinaeskimo Jul 14 at 5:49
I could swear I saw it in passing, while searching for it. Also that I'd seen it on their website in the past (when searching for someone else in another forum). I've been searching for it but can't find it anymore. Wish I'd posted when I saw it, but it was only in passing, it didn't have a dedicated page for it, so I didn't think it would be relevant. Now I really wonder if I really saw it! – a mesmerizing trickster Jul 14 at 6:22
Found it! hopkinschildrens.org/… --- Might be worth sending them a message to ask about adults. But if, quote, "the suspected mechanism is that cancer cells require glucose for survival, and the ketogenic diet deprives them of this essential fuel", wouldn't the mechanism be the same on adults? Still would be a good idea to verify this with other studies linked on the "What causes cancer" link above. – a mesmerizing trickster Jul 14 at 6:28

I second the GAPS soup recommendation AshleyRoz mentioned but look into adding the following pureed items into the bone broth soup for additional nutritional and anti-cancer benefits:

For basic nutrition

  1. GAPS-based Bone broth soup (chicken feet offer the most collagen because they have the most joint tissue... but of course discard the feet after cooking them)
  2. pureed grass-fed organic liver for tons of vitamins, minerals
  3. pureed grass-fed organic beef heart for CoQ10
  4. Mussels/Oysters for Zinc and other vitamins/mineral
  5. Coconut/MCT oil for ketones and your main source of energy
  6. red palm oil for vitamin E
  7. citrus for vitamin C
  8. Spinach for magnesium
  9. brasil nuts for selenium
  10. kelp for iodine and other minerals

Anti-cancer foods The following foods also have anti-cancer properties according to Dr. David Servan-Schreiber author of Anti-Cancer. He not only lived but thrived over 20 years with a particularly bad form of brain cancer.

  1. Generous amounts of anti-inflamatory anti-cancerous turmeric with a 5% ratio of black pepper, because black pepper increases turmerics curcumin intestinal absorbtion rate by 1,000 fold.
  2. Matcha green tea which has 307x more EGCG than other green teas
  3. Oyster mushroom shiitake
  4. Cherries- because they contain Glucaric acid anthocyanin
  5. rosemary for its Turpine fatty acids
  6. cherries for their Glucaric acid anthosionodine
  7. rosemary for Turpine fatty acids
  8. And last but certainly not least is ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is found in fruits including blackberries, cranberries, pecans, pomegranates, raspberries, strawberries, walnuts, wolfberry and grapes.

I would weigh and enter all the foods into the recipie creator at www.nutritiondata.com and see what we are missing and supplement with foods/supplements for the rest. I would imagine minerals like magnesium are harder to come by and you can ground up some supplements like chelated magnesium and add it to the mix. Also look into vitamin D levels to keep them 50-80 range. But of course connect with your doctors and medical professionals to manage and okay everything. It is very important that the mixture be very fluid and able to go through machinery and your loved ones body. So you may not be able to put in nuts etc.

This question is rather personal for me because I just came back from the hospital last night where my grandfather has brain cancer and is on a feeding tube after a seizure.

I spoke with his Registered Dietitian and they are giving him a canned feeding tube diet made by Abbott Laboratories. It is made of industrial seed oils, synthetic vitamins, MCT oil and sugar and sugar and more sugar. What struck me was how they are feeding him 200-250 grams of sugar for the day.

250 grams of sugar is 62.5 teaspoons of sugar. That breaks down to 1.3 cups of sugar per day.

I asked her, why does someone who is prediabetic need 250g of sugar carbs a day if he is not moving? She replied, "it's ok, because we give him insulin shots."

IT'S OK BECAUSE WE GIVE HIM INSULIN?! Pure insanity. Stop giving a sleeping unconscious elderly man with brain cancer carbohydrate poisoning and you don't need to give him insulin. He has never taken insulin at home.

I asked her to look into a diabetic formula and she said their diabetic feeding tube formula is only 1-2% less sugar but has 5 grams of fiber. Insanity.

I hope this helps and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Have you researched the Warburg Hypothesis/Effect on cancer tumerogenesis? That points to a low sugar/carb diet as one that can starve cancers for energy.

I'm not entirely certain this is what you're looking for, but it was eye-opening for me. I had no idea that glucose drips did things like this. It may be more of a "what not to do" story.
